CHAPTER THREE
I don't think I have ever run this much, or this fast in my entire life. Passed the school, the football field, and into the forest surronding the campus. My converse slam against the dead leaves and the grass as I push myself further in, not entirely sure where I am going. I wrap my black sweater tighter and tighter around my body, feeling more and more naked and exposed.
Every tree is a blur. Only the green of the leaves, brown of the bark, and light blue of the sky filter in my head. Eventually, when my heart feels as if it's about to leap from my chest, I stop. I lean my back against a tree (wincing a bit as I crush the wings), and slide down until I am sitting on the forest floor.
I am in a small semi-circle of trees, all looking as if they touch the sky. Bright green light filters in from the sun reflecting off the leaves, creating small patches of yellow and green on the ground. Light brown, decaying leaves are scattered everywhere, only paired with the small green blades of grass desperately trying to reach the light. In any normal circumstance, this would be a beautiful, peaceful place to be.
But this isn't any normal circumstance. On the night of my 18th birthday, giant wings grew out of my back, and now I just tried to fly off of my high school roof. "This is just great..." I whisper.
My head falls into my hands as I pull myself into a curled position. There are no sounds except the chirping birds and the wind blowing through the trees. I rack my brain, trying to find a solution...but I find none. There is no way any rational human being is going to believe what happened to me. And even when I show them the proof...who knows what will happen to me?
The sound of footsteps approaching me causes me to leap to my feet. I glance around, and spot a large branch nestled in between some dead leaves. I reach down and grab it, then point it in front of me. Like a wooden branch is going to do much good agaist an attacker.
Just as I am raising the branch to fend off my attacker, he steps into my view. My hand automatically drops the branch, and I take on a deffensive stance instead. The boy who took the picture, the boy who wears the heavy jackets all the time, the boy who followed me aimlessly through the woods, is standing right in front of me.
He is the one that I always described as being in the middle: not short and small, but not the huge muscular thing that is his friend. He stands about 5'11, a few inches taller than me. Through the bulky jacket, I can tell he is lean with some muscles, but nothing overbearing. His straight black hair was on the shorter side, barely curving down above his ears. He is the one with the bright green eyes, and for the first time, I notice the yellow ring around his pupil. The only color I can compare it to is the color of pure gold.
He stands tall and firm, confidence radiating out of him while I stood hunched, my hands planced defensively in front of me. Neither one of us speaks, neither one of us moves. Finally, it is the boy in front of me that breaks the silence.
"Dawn." I never heard him speak before, and his voice is a complete shock. Smooth. Clear, and defined. The sound most girls would fall for instantly. What you would imagine velvet to sound like. At the same time, confident. That's what makes it deadly.
"Who are you?" I try to demand, but my words come out slightly shaky instead.
"My name is Adriel."
"That's fantastic." I say, finally getting some of my strength back. "But you didn't answer my question, Adriel. Who the fuck are you? What's your problem?"
"You don't need to curse at me Dawn. As I just told you, I am Adriel. And if you want to find out who I am, you need to come with me."
"Right." I snort. "Go with you? So you can bring me out into the woods and do whatever you like to me? I'm not stupid."
"I know you're not stupid. In fact, you are quite brilliant." He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out the cell phone he used to take a picture of me with. With one fluid movement, he throws it to me. I reach up and grab it, with more ease than I have ever had before. Normally, that phone would have crashed into the ground. "Peace offering. And besides, you have no idea where you are. You would never make it out of these woods, even if you tried."
I stare at him for a long time. This boy, who I've never spoken to before this moment, just witnessed me try to fly off our school roof and now he wants to bring me deeper into the woods? Every fiber in my being told me to run, run as fast as I can and never look back. But there was something eating at me, demanding to know who this boy is.
He keeps eye contact with me the whole time. Eventually, I make my decision. I turn my back on him, wind my arm back, and chuck the phone as hard as I can. I watch it soar above the trees, and after a few seconds, drop to the forst floor (probably in pieces) somewhere in the distance. I then turn back to face him, and with every part of my body screaming this is a bad idea!!!, I say, "Lead on."
