The young apprentice padded along the riverbank. It was a warm Newleaf day with plenty of fish in the river and his clan was well fed. The rest of his clan was in their camp sunning themselves.

His head hung and his tail dragged along the grass.

The she-cat had been horrified. She'd run away without a backward glance.

His heart felt as though it was torn in two. One half was loyal to his clan and to the Warrior Code.

The other was dedicated to her. To Gingerpaw, the apprentice from an enemy clan.

He loved her and it was killing him from the inside.

She had to stay loyal to her clan. She had to, or else it would hurt everyone in her clan.

But the hurt he had felt when she had run away was reflecting inside herself, tenfold.
