The clan gasped in dismay.

"But Waterclan can't take Sunstones!" mewed Smallpaw. "The kits and seniors need them to keep warm in bare-leaf!"

Featherstar gazed at her. "I know, Smallpaw." he said. "But we cannot afford to fight them for it. If we do, we will win, but there will be serious injuries amongst our clanmates."

He paused and gazed at the sky. He was thinking of a solution. For a long moment there was silence, then his thoughtful stare lowered again to his assembled cats. "Thrushtail," he yowled. "Willowfur, Sandycreek and Gingerpaw. You will accompany me to the Waterclan camp. We will give Waterclan until sunhigh in three sunrises to return Sunstones to us."

He gazed at the chosen cats. "Follow me to the bramble tunnel."

Grassfoot stepped forwards. "Feathstar, shouldn't I come too? Pondstar will not dare refuse us if you and I are both there."

The leader touched his friend's shoulder with his tail. "I need you to stay here," he meowed. "And guard the camp in case anything or any cat attacks us while we're distracted."

Gingerpaw snatched a mouse from the fresh-prey pile and ate it in hungry gulps. Then she padded to join her mother and mentor at the bramble tunnel. Sandycreek trotted towards them with his shoulder fur bristling slightly.

Lastly, Featherstar said farewell to Grassfoot and lead the cats out into the forest towards the river.
