"I'm sorry, Foxpaw." Featherstar meowed, "for accusing you of hurting Gingerpaw."
"That's okay, Featherstar."
Gingerpaw, Foxpaw and Featherstar sat together next to the fresh-prey pile.
"You see, my clan is unhappy with Waterclan because of the affair over the Sunstones. Add a Waterclan cat and a half-drowned apprentice and one clan is bound to lose patience."
Now that Foxpaw had been pardoned, he seemed quite comfortable in the enemy camp. Gingerpaw longed for them to be alone.
"I know it doesn't mean much," he told Featherstar and Gingerpaw, "but I think your clan needs the Sunstones more than mine. You wouldn't get much sunlight under the trees and I expect the stones would bring a welcome relief from the shade.
"But in Waterclan territory, the there are many sunny spots along the riverbank."
Foxpaw froze, obviously horrified that he'd given something away that might inspire Treeclan to attack Waterclan.
But Featherstar touched Foxpaw lightly on the shoulder with the tip of his tail. "Don't worry," the Treeclan leader reassured him. "We have no intention of hastening a battle between our clans. Gingerpaw and I will forget what you just said."
Foxpaw dipped his head in acknowledgement.
