I hate it here.
I laid on my bed. Arms spread out across my bed, my eyes staring at the ceiling not really looking at anything. Ryan left earlier due to work he had forgotten about last night. He had woken me up to let me know he was leaving and why and I haven't moved since. He left around nine and here I was one thirty and having not moved an inch. I sighed. I got up and turned to face my wall with the big calendar. Focusing on today's date, I felt my eyes go wide.
Shit!
Written in big red letters was a notice that told me that I had a soccer practice at 2. Meaning I was late. Again.
I groaned and threw my soccer stuff on. Luckily, they were still sitting on my chair from Wednesday's practice. Grabbing my soccer ball from my closest, I rushed downstairs, through kitchen, grabbed my water bottle and my keys and stuff them into my sports bag. Bursting through my front door, I locked and sprinted to my car. I was in such a rush that I nearly missed the strawberry blond who was leaning against my mustang. I paused taking the sight in before me. The girl from last night was decked out in the same outfit as me. Red hand band, red jersey tucked into black shorts folded at the top and red and black stripped socks extending to a pair of neon pink cleats.
"Hey sorry. I need a ride to the game and-"
Despite not knowing this girl, last night excluded, I cut her off by telling her to get in. I was already in a rush and I wasn't about to get into the details.
Shutting the door behind me, I started the car and pulled out of the driveway. Once I was on my way, I relaxed a little. I'd probably get there on time now. My car usually refused to start most days and I was glad this was not one of these days. After taking a left off our street, I stole a glance at the girl next to me. She looked older up close and much prettier.
"My name is Whitney," she introduced herself and I smiled loosely. Her voice was very cute.
"Hi Whitney, I'm Imani," I responded, looking straight ahead. "Are you Stacy's replacement?"
Whitney looked at me then looked out the window. "I guess. My mom just told me to put this stuff on."
I raised an eyebrow. "You haven't played before?" She might have interested me but if she couldn't play then we are going to have issues on the field. Stacy played midfielder. Midfielders are like the bridge between defense and offense and they had the biggest supporting roles for scoring and defending.
Whitney threw her hands and started to wave her hands in front of her face. "No I have been playing since I was four." She set her hands on the dash board and sighed. "I just.."
Stopping at a red light I turned to Whitney. "You just..."
Instead of answering, she sighed and made a motion telling me to drop it.
So I shrugged and I did.
When we arrived at the field only half the team was there and a small group was on the circle stretching and the rest were running their last laps. I told Whitney to we were to run three laps around the field, we went and afterwards we joined the stretching circle. The captains, Denice and Shelly, counted off ever other number as we shouted the alternate. Once the team was all stretched out, the captains called me and Whitney over and instructed the other girls to commence warming up.
Denice, with her sunny disposition, stretched her hand out to Whitney. "Hi, you must be Whitney."
"Yes that's me," Whitney replied not taking the hand. I internally smile, glad she could see through a bad façade.
Shelly was a good captain. She was about 5'6" with a pretty athletic build. She had warm green eyes and curly blond hair that was often in a ponytail. She was strong both on the field and on the bench. During games, she was right next to the coaches, cheering on her teammates. She was supportive and sweet and did her best make everyone feel at home on the team. She made an effort to get to know all of us. She is actually one of my closer friends on the team. Although, I'm pretty sure she is only nice to me for the sake of the team.
Denice, on the other hand, didn't do much besides being a captain. She brought the music for practice and told the other girls what drill to do next. She was an amazing player, indisputably the best. Nothing could get between that girl and the ball. Honestly watching her play was the one of the best things of being on the team. However, she never seemed to want anything to do with the team. She was always the first to leave games and team gatherings, despite the extra responsibilities she had to do.
"Nice to meet you. Well, that's all for now. We just wanted to introduce ourselves and since you guys have already met...Imani, do you mind partnering with Whitney here for today," Denice asked politely.
"Kay." I nodded Whitney over and we joined the practice.
After warm ups, the captains ran drills then eventually a scrimmage. Whitney proved herself to be excellent at her position and soon became a favorite for center midfielder. She was also good at moving to get open and knew when to come back to cover my position. In truth, she was a lot better than Stacy. As center defense, she definitely knew how to be helpful and me supporting me and I really appreciated that.
We made a good team.
Not only that, she got so into it. She lost herself in the game. When she played, it seemed like she was trouble free. It was really captivating to watch. She definitely did not look like the tired girl I took into my car.
When practice ended, Whitney caught up with me as I tossed water over my head. "Agh, so hot." When I looked up, Whitney gave me a heated look. I shrugged it off; she was probably still hot from running around so much.
"Ready?"
Whitney shook her head, jarring herself into alertness. "Huh? Yeah."
We headed into my car and I sighed once I got in.
"You okay?" I turned to find Whitney staring up at me with worry etching her face.
I was taken back a little but I shook my head and answered, "yeah, I'm okay. I just need to sleep." A chuckle bubbled up from my throat on the word sleep.
She smiled and turned to face the dashboard. "hey do you mind dropping me off somewhere first? I don't really want to be home alone. My mum and my brother are at work."
"So you are his sister," I confirmed. "Where do you want me to drop you off?"
Whitney shrugged. "I dunno. I just don't want to go home."
"Why don't you just chill at my house?" I offered
"I thought you were going to sleep?"
I shook my head. "Nah I can't never sleep during the day."
