Jay POV
"Prove yourselves. Prove to me you are strong enough to survive!"
The room was dark. The soul illuminated the room, shining a light blue. Zane stood at the ready, Toriel glaring right through him. "Toriel, I don't want to fight you. Please." He said quietly. She was silent, and waved her hands. A sudden vortex of fire appeared. He waved his arm, the soul being hit twice. He twitched, then pressed mercy again. "I don't wanna fight!" He said a little louder. Toriel's expression shifted a little, but she suppressed it into a blank stare. She blasted at the soul with red flames, Zane yelping and scampering to avoid them. "Please stop!" He yelled. "I don't want to fight you!" She stared blankly, acting aloof. Flames scorched the room, making it unnaturally hot. Another blast of fire wreathed around the room, hitting him again and again. "Fight me or run away!" Toriel yelled. She was intimidating, even with Zane almost being her height.  He stood his ground, despite being weak and wounded. "Toriel, please..." He said, out of breath. "Let us pass. I don't want to hurt you."  Toriel took a deep breath. "What are you proving this way?!" She asked. Her hands started to heat up with another magical blast. She spread her hands and he leaped aside, just dodging a barrage of fire. "Stop it." Toriel growled. "I can't hurt you." Zane said. He jumped away from a larger blast, the flames grazing his shoulder. "Stop looking at me that way!" She said defensively. I knew how persuasive the looks he gives could be, and I think it was working. "Go away!" She said sternly, another fiery vortex swishing through the room. "No! I can't bring myself to hurt anyone! Stop!" He said, tears coming to his eyes as a few more fiery projectiles hit him. He was at five health now. Toriel's expression had changed. The next time he spared her, she stopped. Her hands stopped glowing with magic. "I know you want to go home, but..." she began. " please, go upstairs now." She was starting to tear up. He closed his eyes, then spared her again. "I promise I will take good care of you here." Was that a tear I saw?  "I'm sorry. We need to go to the surface." He spared her once more. Toriel smiled weakly. "I know we do not have much, but... We can have a good life here." Kai hugged Cole, lowkey sobbing into his shoulder. Lloyd hugged my arm, tears in his eyes as well. Zane blinked away his tears, and spared again. "Why are you making this so difficult? Please, go upstairs." Zane spoke up. "I'm sorry, Toriel... I can't." He spared again. Her smile faded. Then she laughed a little. "Ha ha... Pathetic, is it not?" She said. Zane blinked back more tears, sparing her again. "I cannot save even a single group of children." They were both silent as Zane spared her again. "No." She said. For a minute, I thought she was going to kill him right then and there. "I understand." I took a breath of relief. "You would be unhappy trapped down here. The ruins become quite small once you get used to them. It would simply not be right for you to stay down here. My expectations... my loneliness... my fear... for you, my children, I shall set them aside." The soul disappeared. The room was lit up again. After a minute, Toriel spoke again. "If you truly wish to leave the ruins..." We looked at each other and nodded, coming to a silent agreement. "I will not stop you. However..." she went quiet, then took a deep breath and started talking again. "When you leave... please do not return. I hope you understand." We all rushed into her furry arms for a group hug. I could see teardrops glittering in Zane's eyes, as well as Kai's. Cole was full scale sobbing. Lloyd whispered in her ear, "goodbye, mom." I simply just hugged her one last time, kind of sad that we were leaving her alone. "Goodbye, my children..."
Then she left.
