Maze
I hid behind the dumpster in the juvie yard, hugging myself around the waist, trying to hide from the four girls who jumped me in the cafeteria, it's been tough week. Having no friends in here wasn't helping.
I felt a sharp pain under my left breast and lifted orange shirt up, I cringed as I saw the purple marks and cuts all over my body. I needed out. I closed my eyes and felt a tear roll down my face. Why couldn't I be normal, finish my senior year and go to college like the rest of my peers.
I heard my name being called out by a female correctional officer, I didn't move. I knew that if she found me out in the yard when I'm supposed to be in the cafeteria then I'll get more sentencing, I couldn't stand it here.
I finally saw her shadow, and looked to the side, she looks down at me and crosses her arms like I disappointed her.
"Maze what the hell are you doing out here ?" She shouted, I was ready to tell this old women to stick it before I saw somebody else standing beside her.
My stomach dropped, knowing exactly who it is. She followed my gaze and looked to her side startled, the correctional officer whispered in her ear and she nodded and walked away.
"Wyatt"
"Are you alright?" He asked quickly, kneeling beside me and lifting my shirt up to expose my stomach
I look up at his blonde hair that was pulled back in a man bun, his baby blue eyes showed nothing but concern and anger as he inspected my body.
"Who the fuck did this to you?"
"Does it matter?" I shrugged "It's going to keep happening if I don't get out of here"
"How much more weeks do you have?"
"Months" I corrected
"I'm going to get you out, I'll speak to the sheriff"
"I threatened his son, I don't think he really gives a shit about me" I say truthfully, I try standing up but fall back down on the ground.
"Don't worry about that, ill sort it out. But we have to get you back to see the nurse I think you got a broken rib" Wyatt lifted me up to my feet holding my waist securely.
I stared at him and remembered the first time I was in here, he was only twenty years old but it was still illegal to be together, Wyatt and I didn't care about age, we instantly had a connection, he covered for me, protected me gave me a phone while I was in here. He was the only true friend I had, I guess he was also my boyfriend but we never talked about our relationship status.
Their was only one problem, he lied to me about his wife, high school sweethearts who got hitched after graduation. She came to visit him at work once when we were both playing monopoly in the cafeteria and introduced herself, I played along and pretended like it didn't matter. That was the last time we saw each other.
"Wyatt, wait." I said softly, as he was about to take me in. "I know we had our ups and downs but thank you, for everything."
He looked down at me and smiles softly, I felt my hand automatically rise up and touch his cheek he closed his eyes and breathed in. After all this time apart and not thinking about him it all came back, all the memories off the good times.
He leans down and presses his lips on mine, I kiss him back softly, although my body was in pain I didn't seem to mind the distraction, even though the kiss was short and sweet I wanted more, Wyatt's hands moved up and cupped my face, I wanted to move in but his touch was so light and caring I didn't. His eyes looked deep into mine, I swallowed hard.
"Listen Maze, I'm getting you out and whatever happens please promise me you will say yes and take it"
"What do you mean?" I asked slightly confused
"I'll explain later, lets go to the nurse." He says kissing forehead before lifting me up bride style.
Wyatt
I walked into the Los Angeles Police Department and immediately saw a familiar face and I walked over to him.
"Detective Cortez" I said smiling and opening my arms wide as he steps in and hugs me.
"My man, how have you been?" He said letting go of me and taking a step back
"I actually came here for your help" I said getting straight to the point
"You know your life a brother to me, saved my ass more times then I can remember.. the team misses you here"
I shake my head, trying to block out the memories of being a detective "Thanks I miss you the most don't tell the others"
"Of course you do, look at my sexy face." He said touching his chin "Enough about me, What did you need Wyatt?"
"It's a girl, she's been put in juvenile detention a week ago and I heard that you and the chief of police personally had something to do with it." I said crossing my arms.
"You mean that delinquent with the weird name?" Cortez asked confused "She's a nobody"
"Maze is a good kid"
He scoffed "She's a criminal, do you know that shit she's done?"
"She's not a criminal."
"Of course not, she's just in juvie because she want to play dress up." Cortez says rolling his eyes
The chief of police stands beside Cortez with a paper in his hands "Looks like you had something to do with the courts assigning me custody of Maze."
"You did what?" Cortez whispers at me harshly
"No sir, all I did was tell them the truth.. shes a minor who was questioned without a lawyer and sent to juvenile because of a warning she did not get, the rest was up to the courts."
"Okay but what happens when she turns eighteen in a few months? She will be in big girl jail and theirs nothing you can do about it."
"She doesn't belong behind bars, she shouldn't be locked up."
"She's a sociopath in the making, her family is a dangerous and so is she." He responded evenly
"She's a victim"
The chief of police scrunched the paper he had and threw it in my face "I'm glad you left my team, you're not man enough."
He walked away, before I could say something I felt a hand on my shoulder. Cortez shook his head.
"Lets go to the bar, get some drinks and think about what the enemy you just made." He said walking out of the station
I followed him close behind, I knew the chief of police was dangerous and messing with him is suicidal but whenever it comes down to it, Maze is worth it.
