IT WAS THE PERFECT CLICHED RELATIONSHIP for the perfect small town where gossip would spread faster than the disease and distrust rose from the roots of its creation.

It was Riverdale.

Alice Cooper knew. She knew the difference between a rose and a lily. She could see the clear dichotomy amidst the dark, treacherous red petals and the bright, innocuous white ones; between what could potentially wreak havoc and what could preserve and save.

The blonde woman blinked, ridding her mind of Jason Blossom's crimson and Polly Cooper's fair hair, only to be presented with a sight not entirely different: one of her other daughter with an enchanted smile on her face as she watched Archie Andrews speak, her eyes bouncing from his eyes to his hands, his lips to his hair-- every part of him.

The blind could hear it in the softness of Betty's voice and the deaf could see it in the tenderness of her touch: the young blonde was smitten with the redhead. If the eyes were the window to the soul, one look at Betty's doe-like brown eyes would reveal years and years of concealed affection.

Alas, as it so often happened with unrequited love, it was within Archie's energetic brown eyes that you could see the blissful ignorance he was reveling in; never even having considered anything beyond the marvelous friendship that he and his next door neighbor shared.

Alice watched with discontent and dismay as the youngsters parted with a hug; Archie bidding a lighthearted goodbye to his all-rounder friend who was headed off for a summer internship while Betty hugged away her anticipations and fears, hoping that by the time she returned, not much would have changed (especially regarding Archie) as she stepped away with a soft exhale and bid farewell.

While the Andrews boy walked home to a pair of positively mouth-watering and stomach-filling burgers, the youngest of the Coopers arrived 'home sweet home' to see the disappointment she was feeling at herself reflected in her mother's eyes, not to forget the cumbersome weight of the youngster's worries that wore her down to the bone.

And so Betty retired to her bed, avoiding her mother's reproaching gaze, not saying a single word as she let her head hit the pillow and closed her eyes, wishing she would fall asleep soon.

Betty had faith that everything would be okay (if not best) by the time she returned; that this summer away from home would somehow ignite a newfound confidence in her, finally giving her the courage to confess her feelings to Archie rather than staring desperately from the sidelines. And from that emerged another one of Betty's dreams where Archie and she were at Pop Tate's, holding hands and enjoying onion rings.

As you would probably expect, things did change that summer. The most devastating change that was kept from Betty when she returned was not that Archie had got together with Ms. Grundy, his music teacher, no.

It happened the day Jason Blossoms confidentially went to visit Penny Cooper, his ex-lover, in her group home and helped her escape.

That summer, to the backwater town of Riverdale, where the feeling of safety, innocence, and decency was first and foremost, arrived the poison ivy of secrets, darkness, and destruction.
