When Estella woke up, she was surprised to see Jace sitting in the infirmary. He sat between Estella and a girl with bright red hair and pale skin. She cleared her throat when no words came out of her mouth.
Jace quickly turned towards Estella, eyes widening when he noticed she had woken up.
"I'll get you some water!" Jace was quick on his feet and had returned with a cup of cold water in his hands. He handed it to Estella who took it with a grateful smile.
She drank the entire cup without stopping to take a breath. Her dry throat was soothed by the time she finished the cup, and she sighed in content when she removed the cup from her lips. Jace took the cup from her and set it aside before sitting back on the chair he was at previously.
"How are you feeling?"
Estella sat up, eyes focusing around the room until they landed on her brother, Jude. He laid unconcious at the far end of the room, a single white blanket was draped over his sweaty body and his hair clung to his forehead from the sticky substance that escaped his pores. The teen threw the blanket off of her, ignoring the dizziness that formed in her vision as she made her way towards Jude.
Jace followed behind her, making sure he was right next to her if she still felt weak. The blond watched the sibling interaction. Estella pushed back Jude's hair, and looked around at his slumped body. Memories of the night they almost drowned came back to her, and she stepped away from Jude, body tensing from the realization.
"I should be dead." Estella looked at Jace in confusion. "Why aren't I dead? We drowned."
Jace smiled softly, trying to comfort the girl as he stepped closer. "Well," Jace scratched the back of his neck as he tried to decide what to say. "You did drown, but somehow you guys came to the Institute just in time."
Estella's frown deepened and she gave Jace a look that begged him to go on. She couldn't remember how she and her brothers came back to the Institute.
Were they saved? Were they discovered missing by fellow shadowhunters who then rescued them?
"You and your brothers just appeared out of thin air." Jace shrugged, confused by everything himself. "In the middle of the Control Center you guys were just there. One second you weren't and the other you were. It was almost as if you guys went through some kind of portal, but it was different."
"Different how?" Estella didn't know many warlocks, especially in New York. She was certain there were no warlocks in the room, or anywhere near the mission.
