Frederick laid his hand on top of the newborn's hair. His fingers ran through the dark hairs that spewed messily atop the baby's head. He smiled softly when the baby girl cooed up at her father, her eyes blinking softly as the touch of her father was making her sleepy. Just as the newborn's eyes began to close, the door to Frederick's office slammed open, and in came a set of twins. The two-year olds flashed their baby teeth to their father, the youngest of the pair running with open arms.
"Papa!" Little arms circled around Frederick's legs and with one arm still holding the more than awake baby, the man patted his son's head.
"Hey, Jude." Creases formed around Frederick's mouth as he smiled down at his son, his eyes then adverting to the other twin, who stood shyly at the door. He was pressed against the door frame, his eyes cautiously watching his father who held the newborn in his arms. The father knew his soon was shy, and extended his free arm toward him. "Come here, Jax." The little boy smiled and ran to his father, his little arms copying his brother and wrapping around his dad's waist.
"Hi papa." Jaxon's small voice made Frederick chuckle.
"Good morning, my boy." Frederick crouched down to the boys' level and revealed their sister.
"Can she talk yet, papa?" Jude asked, his eyes widening at the sight of Estella.
Frederick laughed and shook his head at the twins. "She's only turned a month today, Jude. Of course she doesn't speak yet."
"Can I hold her?" Jaxon looked up at his dad, blue eyes contrasting against darker ones as a baby toothed smile flashed up to Frederick. A bright smile cast the Ravenwood father's features and he nodded.
"How about you both hold her? Together."
The twins immediately extended their arms out in front of themselves and Frederick placed the baby in their arms, although he never let go of her, he still made it look as though the twins were carrying her.
"She's so pretty." Jaxon smiled fondly at the girl, without realizing he might drop the baby, he let a hand fly to the girl's dark hair and pushed it back. Estella looked at her brother, a small smile forming on her features making the twins and her father swoon.
"Like mommy!" Jude smiled at his father, the heartbreak on the man's face going unnoticed by the two-year old. "When will we see mommy, papa?" Jude suddenly became serious, or as serious as a two-year old could get. Frederick pulled the baby against his chest again and stood up. His face had dropped by now and he knew whatever he said, would go past his children's head as they were barely learning to speak, death was a concept neither would understand.
