The Stranger
Very slowly they turned around and looked over the back of the couch they were leaning against. There, standing in the doorway to the next room, was girl. She was short, with shoulder length brown hair, clear blue eyes, and a muscular figure that was very noticeable through her loose-fitting clothes. She had soft features and a kind face.
Hi, said the strange girl.
Uh, hi, said the twins in unison.
They all sat there in silence, staring at each other, not daring to move just yet. To say it was awkward would be putting it mildly to say the least.
Finally, the stranger broke the silence herself, so, do you want to use my fishing pole or not?
Beth glared at Bryant, daring him to say a word in response. But of course, he ignored her.
Um, sure. Thanks.
What the hell?! hissed Beth.
What? We need food. Did you pack a fishing pole? Cause I sure didnt. Said Bryant, feigning a look of innocence. Besides, we can use it, return it and be on our way in a matter of hours.
That sounds a lot like a plan Bry.
I know, Im sorry. Once were done eating well decide whats next. In the meantime, lets enjoy some human interaction while we can.
Yeah, I bet I can think of a few reasons youd like to enjoy her company
SHUT UP BETH!
Beth sat back down on the floor giggling wildly while Bryant glared at her and the stranger stared at her like she was a mad woman.
Once Bethany caught her breath and calmed down enough to talk she said, okay, thank you for offering us your fishing pole. Thats very kind for a stranger. My name is Brittany, and this is my friend Joshua. Whats your name?
Hesitantly, the stranger spoke, youre welcome to it. I dont use it anyway. I prefer to use the traps for food. My name is Alex.
So do you know which way to the stream then? asked Bryant.
Geez Josh that really is some small talk skills you have there, Said Beth as she rolled her eyes.
Im sorry okay! I am hungry! he said just as his stomach let out a low rumble.
The girls giggled and Alex left the room to return with a fishing pole and a tackle box.
Head west and youll come to the stream in a quarter mile, she said while still chuckling. Ill make up some squash to go with the fish and Ill see you when you get back.
With that the twins started walking. They walked all the way to the stream in silence and didnt speak until they cast off their line and sat down to wait.
