I pulled on my costume, Charlie beside me checking the fit carefully.
"Alright, you're ready to go," she said, making sure she hadn't forgotten to take any pins out from the couple of places that needed slight hemming.
She then pulled out makeup, telling me sternly to 'stay very still, or get an eye poked out.' Her brushes were organized well, but no amount of previous experience kept me from sneezing soon after she finished powdering my face and dusting my cheekbones with silver.
I hadn't talked to the other skaters much. Most of them were nice, sure, but being around Yuri was so much better- even when blushing uncontrollably the whole time.
I knew that I hated that John Jack-o-lantern guy. He was narcissistic and rather rude at times. There was another skater that I had to keep an eye on as well, but all I could remember was that he had a beard.
"There! All done!" Charlie exclaimed, stepping back to admire her work.
Charlie had a flair for the dramatic, but had stepped it down slightly for this, focusing more of highlighting my eyes and cheeks using silver eyeliner and a well-blended smoky eye to create something of a whimsical storm.
"Now, what to do with your hair?" She questioned, rummaging through her bag. She could have auditioned for Mary Poppins with the number of things she could pull out of there.
"Aha! Close your eyes and hold your breath."
Hairspray?
The compound was cold and felt heavy, almost. She stopped and combed through my hair before shaking another can and applying that one lightly. She combed through it again, this time ruffling it a little towards the end.
"There, now you're finished!" She exclaimed, holding up a circular mirror.
I squinted at the person reflected. My ginger hair had been temporarily been dyed to black, silver dusting it same as my face from the second layer. Charlie giggled at my expression, my mouth
wide open in surprise."So cool!" I whispered. I reached up to ruffle it only to have Charlie bat them away.
"No touching. The dye is washable and won't stay on well if you keep handling it." The cheers of millions of people echoed through the concrete as another routine finished. Butterflies erupted in my stomach and I felt a horrible jittery feeling take control of my legs. Charlie gripped my hand, giving me a small smile, rubbing circles with her thumb.
"You'll do just fine, Sam."
I hope so.
Alex suddenly burst in, raving and ranting precariously, "Alright! You're almost up. Yuri is up now and then it's you." She was strung out and keyed up for more than usual, putting Sam further on edge.
I gasped slightly at the mention of Yuri's performance and made to scoot out of the room to go watch onto to be stopped swiftly by both Charlie and Alex. "Hey!" I cried indignantly as I tried to struggle (key word: tried)
