Don't Apologise To Me

Theodosia's P.O.V.

"Is Johns Laurens..."

The words rang in my ears, no, it couldn't be, and I had interfered.

Alex was going to stop him, what had I done?

Eliza's P.O.V.

The Hufflepuff table erupted. Kids all along the table were throwing their hats in the air; the only people not cheering were John and I.
Glancing at the other tables I saw my shock reflected in my sisters' faces.
Suddenly a little girl, I recognised her as Martha Laurens ran up to John and flung her arms around him.

"No John, you can't go." John carefully detached Martha and crouched down to talk to her.

Angelica's P.O.V.

"Is John Laurens..."

The words were fake, they had to be. John?

"No," I choked out. We've been so close he could be my little brother.
Looking over at Laf and Herc I saw they were chalk white, with looks of horror painted on their faces. Their dispute was forgotten in the light of this tragedy.

James' P.O.V.

"Whats?! Laurens?" The words exploded from my mouth. Eliza shot daggers down the table at me and I shut my mouth tight. I looked over at Aaron and Thomas but they were in deep conversation. Why would John enter? I saw Alexander staring at Hercules and Lafayette. They looked as if two bludgers had hit them in the stomach, winded, speechless and I understood; they had convinced John to enter.
Suddenly I felt a twinge of pity, as that could have been me. I had entered because Thomas and Aaron did; I shoved the feeling deep down inside me.

Maria's P.O.V.

I rounded on Laf and Herc and began whispering at them furiously.

"What have you done?!" I hissed at them like an angry goose, I was practically spitting.

"John's going to be torn to shreds. They'll be sending whats left of him home in a match box Mulligan! Look at me! This is all your fault! Do something!"

Hercules' P.O.V.

Blind panic was flooding my brain, I couldn't think, and I was drowning in fear. I couldn't meet John's eyes. Laf was staring down at his hands, even the Hufflepuffs who had been celebrating jubilantly quietened. Everyone was looking at John.

Thomas' P.O.V.

Ha! John Laurens?! I know him, this can't be! That poor kid they're going to eat him alive!

"Cheer up Aaron!" I said.  Aaron, for some reason, was looking very pale. "Aaron?" I said tentatively. "Um, this is Laurens we're talking about here, this is funny... you can laugh."

Aaron's P.O.V.

My first impulse was to howl with laughter, but somehow it didn't come. From somewhere deep inside my mind a memory, well buried, flickered.

"Filthy Half-Blood!"

"Don't call him that! Shut up, just shut up!"

"What did you say son?"

"I said DON'T FUCKING CALL HIM THAT!"

"No Thomas," I said quietly, "it's not funny."

Thomas' P.O.V.

Um, what?

Lafayette's P.O.V.

My God, we did this. I did this. We were sending John to his death and it was all our fault. Herc was next to me gaping like a fish deprived of water. Suddenly I realised my mouth was open, I shut it.  Herc's mouth moved but no noise came out, we looked at each other and the depth of what we'd done finally sank in.

Peggy's P.O.V.

John? What? No! My surrogate brother, my fellow seeker, my older voice and the second half of my mind. This couldn't be true it couldn't. I casually picked up my fork and jabbed it into the back of my hand but I didn't wake up.

"Peggy, stabbing yourself isn't going to help John," murmured Cissy gently.

"No!" I cried, leaping up, "I can't lose you too!"

Alex's P.O.V.

"No!" A cry escaped my lips, but with all the chatter nobody heard. It was as if everything was in slow motion: Eliza shocked and shaking, Laf and Herc staring at each other, Peggy - a forgotten piece of cake half way to her mouth, Maria yelling at Herc and Angelica and Theo staring incredulously at Washington.
I myself felt a little faint and numb, I couldn't move. My eyes locked with John's and I wanted to say something, anything, but I couldn't Then John looked away and was I imagining it, or was Aaron as white as I was?

John's P.O.V.

"Is John Laurens..."
I almost laughed out loud. This was some joke, right?

Laf and Herc would jump out at any moment grinning and shouting 'Gotcha!' Nothing happened. The Hufflepuffs began to quieten, everyone was looking at me.

I looked at Eliza nonplussed; surely it couldn't be me? Silent tears were running down her face and then she gave me a little push towards Washington.
