We arrived to the apartment with enough time to start packing. Emily was a nervous wreck as she stayed in my arms. Vladek rushed around the apartment, filling as much as he could into two suitcases, cursing in several different languages. He came into the living room and handed me the suitcases in exchange for Emily. He ushered us out of the apartment and into the ally between the buildings.

"Vladek, where are we going?" I asked quietly.  He glanced back at me as we rounded the corner.

"Switzerland, then France and finally Italy." He said, grabbing my elbow. "Elyza, I think we are being followed." He whispered, glancing behind himslef again.

"Vladek, I'm not leaving you." I declared. He whipped his head around and glared at me.

"You promised me that you would run if I told you to. I want you to run now!" He snapped, shifting Emily over his shoulder.

"No, Vlad--" He grabbed the suitcases and pushed me ahead of him.

"Dammit, Elyza, go to Annette's store. Our contact will meet you there. Stay with him." He commanded, forcing me into a dead sprint. I ran to Annette's where Vladek's contact caught me and ushered me into the back of the car. I looked around frantically for Vladek and Emily, but they were no where to be found. My heart lodged itself in my throat. My last two reasons for living were gone.

"Vladek," I screamed as I pounded on the back window. The man sped off into the night, leaving my family in the hands of the Nazi's. "Vladek, Emily!" I continued screaming for them, but it was useless. They were gone.

I'm so sorry this chapter is so short! I've been having major writers block for this book, but I thought a three hundred or so word chapter would be more effective. So vote, comment, share!
