Hey you guys! This is chapter one. it's kind of short, but I hope it's good! I like it. Please, tell me what you think!
Chapter One: Keeping a Promise
My whole body shook with anticipation and yearning as the plane gently plummeted back to ground level. I was back in California, just to keep my promise to Benny, just to see his oceanic eyes again. Though it's been a total of nine years, I dreadfully hope that he remembers me and is as excited to see me as I am him. He doesn't know I'm here, but I know he likes surprises.
"We are now in California, the plane has landed," a nasal, high pitched voice sounded over the P.A of the plane, startling me.
I was about ready to pee on myself as people gathered their things from the over-head luggage compartments. The excitement in me was replaced with another feeling; I believe it was anxiousness and slight nervousness.
Walking through the airport was tantalizing. It seemed as if my feet wouldn't move fast enough no matter how many times I increased my pace. With each step, I grew more anxious. The bright lights towering over me were causing me to squint, but I couldn't stop.
Walking into the warm, California air, I realized how much I'd miss this. The hot days, the beautiful scenery and relaxed feeling I gained while being here.
I managed to stop a taxi, throw my stuff in the trunk, and get in. I told a round faced man the address of my destination and we merged into the slow traffic.
What if he doesn't recognize me? Or worse, remember me? I shook my head as if to clear the bad possibilities and switched them for something more optimistic. He’s going to see me and jump onto me and everything will be fine. I kept repeating that until I found myself on my way to Benny's house. At least I hope it's still his house. I would be uncontrollably devastated if he had moved.
As the trees flew by almost in two second intervals, I found myself at the house I'd spent most of my younger childhood. It looked basically the same, though there was more chipped paint and an added vehicle in the driveway. I still felt that hominess that I'd always felt and the memories started flooding my head, ending with the most important. The moment where I kissed Benny.
"Thank you, Driver," I puffed out whilst sighing so it may have came out as if I were depressed.
I pulled out a fifty and gave it to him. I knew I'd overpaid, but I told him to keep the change, got my stuff and went up to the front door. I drew in the longest breath I'd ever taken and rung the doorbell.
"Coming!" A foreign voice scared me, but I just stood there, looking up at the sky until the door opened.
To my surprise, a boy around my age stood there. He was undoubtedly foreign to what I'd seen in Ohio. He has bleached blonde hair, and pale green eyes. He was a monster in height, though he didn't look more than four inches taller than I.
"Hi!" he exclaimed, waking me from my intense scan of him.
I smiled weakly, "Is Benny here?"
I asked the question, knowing he was still living here due to his father's blue hummer in the driveway, at least I hope it's his.
"Yeah, he is. Do you want him?" Little did he know how I took his question.
Of course I want him. I fought the smirk I knew wanted to emerge and just simply nodded, not knowing how to talk to mystery boy.
"Babe!" he yelled.
Babe? Is this Benny's boyfriend? I hope not, I'd literally be crushed, under a car somewhere in San Diego though I'm currently in Los Angeles. I couldn't die where I was born. That's stupid.
"Coming!" The voice was so clear, so cute, so Benny. I knew his voice anywhere, and though it's gotten deeper, I can still here his high voice of a seven year old.
A boy of whom I believed to be Benny, came to the door and abruptly stopped when they saw me. The only pure verification I had that this was my best friend was his eyes. I'll never forget his eyes. Though his appearance was completely different. Tattoos marking three-fourths of his body, black hair which used to be muddy brown, and I believe a tongue piercing. He was still super short, though.
"Oh my God, slap me in my face and tell me I'm dreaming...Ian?" Benny moved the blonde boy aside and came out on the porch and hugged me hard and long. My assumption and hoping worked!
I was shocked at first, but quickly wrapped my arms around his small frame and squeezed him gently. I dug my face in his hair and inhaled. He still smelled like mangoes. He loves mangoes.
He finally pulled away; and though it was almost one hundred degrees outside, I instantly felt cold without his warm body against mine.
"I can't believe you're here. Why are you here?" he asked.
"I promised you I'd come back," I said with a smirk.
He blushed and looked down, then turned around and looked at the blonde guy.
"This is my boyfriend, Charlie." As the word boyfriend left his lips, I felt my heart shatter and fall onto the cement.
"Nice to meet you, Ian." The Charlie guy reached his hand out to me, and not wanting to show how hurt I was, I shook it. His hand felt grimy, just like a thief's. He stole the love of my life away from me.
"Well don't just stand there, come in!" Benny yelled, walking into the house, followed by Charlie, who'd managed to grab one of my bags, leaving me with my parka and a duffel.
The house hadn't changed much, but you could tell a sixteen year old lived here. There were clothes on the stairs and other random things scattered about. I just let out a small chuckle and set my bags where Charlie had set my suitcase.
Before I realized what was going on, I was being hugged and kissed all over my face.
"Oh, Ian, I thought we'd never see you again!" The voice was girlish, but had a maturity to it.
I looked down to see Benny's mom hugging me. I smiled and hugged her back. She was even smaller than Benny. Her hair was the same dark brown that I'd remembered, but it seemed to be slowly graying. She looked beautiful, just as I remembered her to be. Her eyes were the same color as Benny's, though slightly lighter.
"Well, here I am." I chuckle.
"Here you are. And you've gotten so big! Wow, you're tall!" I blushed and scratched my neck.
You know that awkward feeling you get when talking to adults? I was feeling that plus wanting to catch up with Benny, meaning I felt awkward and impatient.
Managing to escape Bonnie, Benny’s mom’s, questioning, I went into the living room which I’d seen Benny and Charlie go into.
There they were, in all their glory, kissing each other like they hadn’t seen each other in almost ten years. In that case, Benny should be kissing me, not Charlie. I couldn’t breathe, I felt as if I were dying.
Benny broke the kiss, smiling at Charlie, then saw me standing there, eyes glossy with tears that just wouldn’t fall.
“Ian…” Benny’s sweet voice couldn’t even make my heart jump back in it’s place.
The overpowering emotion was killing me slowly, and I began to feel my knees buckle, and my body shake with hurt. I felt like crying, but the tears wouldn't come, so I fell onto the floor, devastated with not only the scene, but myself, for falling in love this dramatically.
It's a pretty short chapter. I think the prologue was longer than this, but I'll try to make the next chapter longer. I just had to end it there, to add suspense.
