Summary: Omelas is a utopian city and the story takes place during the festival of summer. It is characterized by its beauty and happiness, the city joins together for this festival everyone sing and dances. They dispose of the destructive things in life even though they're happy they are not simple, live is still complicated and is not a fairy tale. There is something more cruel that happens beneath the city, there is a child who is locked away in a tiny room under one of the main buildings, the child gets picked randomly out of the citizens. The happiness of Omelas depends on this child's misery people come and see this child at least once in their life. Many overcome guilt but some never do and these are the people who leave Omelas and never return.
