The war was over.
Times were changing.
At last, the town was at peace with Overlords Shell and Eric keeping control of the vampires and mundanes. There was only one problem.
Blood was running low.
-----
The scent of warm honeydew cinnamon buns leaked from the bakery downtown. A factory that once sent a deathly signal to mundanes now had a bakery sign over the previously posted "Blood Bank." Pastries made by the bakery quenched the hunger of human and beast. That was what Shell thought as he opened the business in Eric's name. To enforce this act, laws were distributed banning the harm of any mundane, including for drinking purposes. However, vampires grew sick from withdrawal. While most could be quenched by feeding on farm animals, there was one whose hunger could only be subsided by blood of mundanes.
Black ichor was plastered to the walls as the streaming acid dripped from Shell's fangs. Knelt over the bed, Eric's frame faded as darkness clouded his view.
"Shell!" Eric shouted, his bare arms wrapping around his waist and dragging him back across the scarlet covers.
After the act was passed, Shell quickly discovered the toll animal blood took on him. But by then, it was too late. The pungent scent of vinegar lingered as Eric carried the weak vampire into the bath to cool his body.
"One more time," Shell choked out, "Eric, just once more. I can do this. Just once-"
"Not a chance," Eric directed, his shaking hands rubbing the crusted blood from his lips.
Shell's shallow breath echoed in the bathroom as Eric ran his fingers through the red splotches knotted in his blonde streaks.
Eric's POV
Green.
That's the color I try to imagine when I'm stressed. Yet as I stare into Shell's eyes, terror floods through my body. How long has it been now? A month? Two months? The bakery has given him everything but his blood thirst comes back more persistent. I gently brushed back his ash blonde bangs and listened to his shallow breathing. He can't go on much longer like this. Leaning forward, I kissed the corner of his lips, remembering the goofy grin that was always plastered to his face. I gave a somber smile as I pulled back and watched his eyes return to my attention. They seemed distant. And that's when I realized. He wasn't watching my eyes, listening to my words, or coming to any senses. Silently, he watched the pulse beating from my throat.
His arms draped across my back as he pulled me closer. The water dripped down my back as he lifted himself out of the tub. My lips parted in surprise as he broke out into hysterical laughter. The echoes drifted down the corridor until it left us in silence. I loosened my grip, falling back into the cabinets as he lurched forward and straddled my hips. My back arched forward as he dug his nails into my arms and panted into my ear.
"I'm thirsty, Eric," Shell whispered, kissing my neck until I felt his fangs graze my skin, "Real thirsty."
I looked back up to meet his eyes. The soft and playful look was replaced by lust alone as he bit his lip, drawing out of drop of blood. As it landed on my lips, I licked his bottom lip and closed my eyes. And green was the last thing I saw.
"Go ahead, baby," I whispered, "Drink up."
