Chapter 1.5

"Gotta make a move to a

Town that's right for me

Town to keep me movin'

Keep me grovin' with some energy

Well, I talk about it

Talk about it

Talk about-"

"Hello?"

"It's Dalek. Where are you? We were expecting you at least twenty minutes ago."

"Where am I? I'm stranded in my car down the street from the park with a practically comatose girl in the backseat because YOU didn't know when to give up!"

"So it's true. It didn't work. We'll have to come up with another alternative then. Maybe we can get Andel-"

"No, it didn't work, idiot! Why didn't you come up with that conclusion a little earlier, maybe before you were on the verge of killing the girl? Do you know how important it is that nothing goes wrong?" His voice was rising.

"Calm down, man, of course I know. What's with you? Since when do you care what happens to the Key?"

"Since it became impossible to retrieve the Stalež Krvca without it! Or have you forgotten that?"

"No, of course I haven't forgotten. I was just making sure that the Compel was indeed non-productive. We thought maybe she had a higher resistance, so we just amped it a bit, no harm done."

"No harm done? If kicking a dog doesn't make it sit and stay, then you try something else, you don't kick it HARDER!"

"The dog? Really, Zale? Aren't we a little touchy today. Are you sure there isn't another reason? Does she remind you of Susi or Len? Is that it?"

"No, of course not, she's not even blond and that's besides the point. Your thoughtless actions could have cost the entire-"

"Ohhh, rightttt. She's a redhead, isn't she? That explains it. You always had a soft spot for redheads."

"Shut up, Dalek." The air in the room grew cold. "Things are different now, everything is different now."

"Not really," came the smug voice. "Some things are just the same. I can tell you that Lina will not be happy..."

"You wouldn't," he hissed.

"Nah, don't worry. Nobody needs more drama, and I still owe you one for that incident with the truck." His voice grew gentler. "Just don't get hurt again. Maybe it's time you just accepted everything. I have. It's easier on the soul."

"There is no again. I already have accepted everything. I thought you knew that." He hung up and sat back, staring out into the stars.

"Okay, Zale. Okay."
