Why Not?

The next morning was more peaceful than before. Granted I knew it was the weekend now but still very pleasant. I slowly opened my eyes, groaning in the process.  I sat up, looking around the room and stretch. I glance over to my phone and saw that it was on, which was odd because I never got texts on Sundays unless it was super important,or what my mother thought was important.  Regardless, I reached over to the dresser next to my bed and picked up my phone.  It was from Lillie.  I rubbed my eyes in shock, she usually sleeps until 12:00 in the afternoon during the weekends. I hurried and put my password in, pressed the text and read it.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!?!?!?" it read. I stared at it, confused for a moment but I soon grew annoyed. "What? She can't expect me to know what she's talking about. Seriously, just say it!" I rubbed my head and texted back, ".....what are you talking about?" Not 2 seconds after I sent that I say she was typing. This couldn't be good. While she was typing I contemplated my life choices, what steps did I take to get my into this mess. I just woke up and already I 'm in trouble. I felt my phone vibrate and turned my focus back to that. "WHAT DO YOU THINK?! MS. I HAVE A BOYFRIEND AND I'M TOO COOL TO TELL HER BFF!"she made sure to add at least 50 angry faces. I blinked for a moment, boyfriend? Since when did I have a boyfriend? I started to text back, "Uh I don't have one of those." I put my phone down and went to my wardrobe.  I heard my phone vibrate but I was more focused on getting out of this night gown. Next thing I knew my phone was buzzing uncontrollably. I rolled my eyes but I didn't look at my phone.

A few minutes later and my door swung open, scaring me half to death. I spun around, thankful I was dressed, to see my mom standing there.  She rushed over to me and cupped my face, it seemed like she was looking for scars or something. "M-Mom?! What's wrong? Is there something wrong with my face?" I was panicking and trying to get her to calm down. "Are YOU okay? He didn't hurt you did he?" she asked, just as panicked as me.

"Did who hurt me?"

"That boy Lillie told  me about. The same one I told you to stay away from!"

"What boy?"

There was a long pause as she continued to check my face. It took me a while to realize what she meant.

"......Oh! That boy. Wait, why did you want me to avoid him anyway? And why did you give Lillie your number?"

She let go of my face and sighed, "I suppose I should tell you the truth........I gave her my number because I trust her more than I trust you." I rolled my eyes, "Okay first off, I know that's a lie. Second, I'm more concerned about the first question." I  tapped my foot. "Okay okay, I didn't want you talking to him because of his family. He just brings a lot of.....drama with him. I don't want you around that." I cocked my head to the side, "Drama? I can handle that. How bad is this drama?" I said with the utmost confidence. My mom just patted my head and smiled, "Don't worry about it.  I just don't want you around all that nonsense. Now come downstairs, breakfast is ready." I rolled my eyes and nodded.  Once she was out of the room, I grabbed my phone and sent Lillie a long paragraph about how angry I was at her. I ran downstairs and into the kitchen. "Hello family!" I chimed happily, hiding my rage. I looked around the room, everyone staring at me. "Hehe, you're never this happy in the morning." my brother, Peter, said.

Peter is my little brother, even though he doesn't want to admit it. Just because he's two years younger than me, he thinks that we're practically the same age. To which I reply, "That's a load of bullshit."

"Well maybe today is different, Pete." I said evilly. His cheeks puffed up, "Will you stop calling me that?! I hate that nickname! Call me something else like The incredible Mr. P?" he said puffing out his chest. My dad started laughing, "Do you pity the fool, Mr. P?" His bad joke was followed by  a groan of annoyance from all of us.

My dad, Terrence Simpson, is the master of bad puns around here. He tries his best with, well, everything. Support, jokes, teenage emotions, you name it. You can't blame him for trying thought, sometimes that's all you can do.

"Terrence, make another bad joke like that and I'm leaving you." my mom says, scrapping scrambled eggs onto a plate. "Mom, you say that all the time but we all know that you would die without dad." Peter said. He realized what he said a prepared himself for a slap or something. All he got was a pluck on the ear. "That may be true but that doesn't mean you can point it out, Pete." she chuckled.

And last, but not least, there's my mom. Rita Fritz-Simpson is the glue that keeps this family together. The four of us are fine together but the other people in our family kinda mess everything up. And she can be either  the ball of sunshine that keeps everyone happy or the Major that keeps everyone in line. Our family is kinda dysfunctional so I feel bad for her, she has a lot to deal with. Overall she copes with it, and for that she deserves the world.

"Oh Ruby, I forgot to ask you. How was your dance thingy on Friday?" Pete asked. I just shrugged, "It was just a boring dance. Nothing exciting happened at all." I said all of this nervously. My mother just looked at me with a blank stare. She brought two plates over to the table for me and my dad, "She danced with a boy. A boy  I told her to stay away from all together." She glared at me before going back over to the counter to get my brothers plate. I felt Pete's eyes staring into my soul. "You danced?! Ruby Gale Simpson danced with someone?!" he asked sarcastically. You could see his amusement from Mars and you could see my glare from Pluto. "Yeah I did. He was a total weirdo and jerk face." I said, rolling my eyes. There was a long silence before laughter erupted from both my brother and father. "What's so funny???" I asked confused. "Y-Your first school dance and you dance with a jerk face? This is hilarious!" my father said in between breaths. I looked back at my mother with an annoyed look and she stared back with a look of accomplishment. She knew what she was doing and she did not care that I'm gonna have to endure their torment until I move out. "Its not finny dad," I pouted. "He came outta no where! Pulled me onto the dance floor like.....like....some kind of brute." Pete stopped laughing and started to eat. "Brute? I don't think we're in the 1920's sis." he said with a mouth full of scrambled eggs. I cringed at the sight, "You know its getting harder and harder convincing people that we're related?" He rolled his eyes and swallowed his food. "Don't try and change the subject. So, who was the young man that danced with my daughter?" he asked happily. I was scared at first but remembered something. My father isn't really a violent man. My father always thought the cliche "kill any boy that comes near my daughter" dads were morons, and I have to agree with him. I shrugged, "Derick Edwards."

My chuckled nervously, his face painted with horror. He looked over to my mother and I looked over to my brother. We both felt the mood in the room change but we didn't understand it. "What's wrong?" Pete asked, looking at both mom and dad.  "Nothing Pete. Right sweetie?" he asked my mother sweetly. She sighed as she sat the plate in front of my father. She nodded as she sat across from me, "Don't worry about it." Pete cocked his head to the side while my face morphed into a mess of confusion and slight annoyance. "What? But you literally warned me about him. Why shouldn't I?" I asked looking at her like she was crazy.

"Well I did, but now I'm telling you not to worry about it." she said looking back at me.

"Yeah, but why? How can you just change your mind like that?" I said with a snap.

She looked me up and down and glared at me, "Who are you talking to young lady?" she said with her arms crossed.

I started to get scared. I just realized who I was talking to and leaned back in my seat. "I....I'm sorry." I said looking down.

"Listen to me. I don't want you around that boy ever again. Understand?" she asked sternly.

I nodded and started to eat my food quickly. I looked at my father and brother, both just as scared as I was.

"W-Well.....whats everyone's plans for today?" my father asked, trying to ease the tension. My brother noticed and smiled nervously, "Um, I was planning on going to the skate park." My father nodded and looked over to my mom, "What about you Rita?" he asked. My mom got up and made her way upstairs. My father and Pete sighed collectively. "Dad, what was that about?" Pete asked with a worried look on his face.

"Let's just say, your mother has bad history with the Edwards family. And, until she's ready to talk to you guys about it, you're just gonna have accept that for now." my father dais sadly.

Me and my brother merely looked at each other and nodded.
