CHAPTER ONE - FAMILIAR FACES
|
The Matthews family had resided in the tiny town of Riverdale for many generations, which is why Amanda and Paul Matthews found themselves moving back to the small town from New York after leaving together nearly 18 years ago. But, now the pair are joined by 3 teenagers, their 17 year old son and their 16 and 15 year old daughters.
Though they had arrived back in Riverdale in March, the 3 teens had not yet ventured the halls of Riverdale high school due to the fact that they had been allowed to continue online education through their old academy. And now, the first day of school in September, the screaming fest had begun.
The middle child, a quiet girl by the name of Kyla sits at the dining table with a book in her hands as she listens to her brother and sister bicker with each other over whose turn it was to use their shared bathroom. Their parents had already left for the morning, their Father who was already an hour out of town for work and their Mother who was a nurse at the hospital, both had been gone since 6am and now at 8:30am, Kyla sits, ready to leave the house as her two siblings scream at each other.
Of course there was more than the one bathroom, but because Spencer and Mackenzie were just that messy, their parents had banned them from using the other bathrooms in the house, giving Kyla her very own bathroom with the threat of confiscating it if she didn't clean up after herself. Kyla had also been given the attic bedroom when they had arrived to their Mother's childhood home, which was where the teen spent most of her time either reading or plucking at the strings of her guitar.
Kyla looks up from her book to check the time on her phone as the screaming had finally died down, with 15 minutes to spare Mackenzie and Spencer finally rush down the stairs, their bags thrown over their shoulders, Spencer's car keys in his mouth as he pats down his messy blond hair. Kyla closes her book, placing it back on the bookshelf the lines the walls.
She approaches the front door where her guitar case and her school bag sit patiently awaiting to be loaded into the car. Kyla tucks a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear as she fiddles with her flannel. She had chosen to wear a pair of black shredded jeans, a loose grey shirt and a black and red flannel, her hair tied into a braid.
"Alright, hurry, get in the car" Spencer's voice calls from the kitchen as he and Mack reemerge with pre cooked pancakes between their teeth. Kyla grabs her bags and hurries outside to Spencer's run down second hand car that the three of them liked to call his 'shit box'.
Five minutes later and they are crammed into the car, driving down the street. Mack giving Spencer directions from her phone, giggling from texts she receives from some friends that she had already made in 6 months that they had lived in town. Spencer of course had his own friends, but Kyla, had none. She had spent the month of July in and out of hospital after some freak accident that had left her with amnesia and she could remember nothing after their arrival in town. No one liked to talk about it.
Kyla remains quiet in the back seat of the car, she watches the town pass her by before it slowly disappears and school property appears in her window. Students litter the front lawns and parking lot as they all chat together, seemingly all friends. Small town, everyone knows everyone.
Many faces turn to watch the unfamiliar car park in the lot and 3 new faces emerge from it, they whisper to each other, pointing out the 3 seemingly out of place blond kids as they all grab their bags from the back seat. Kyla grabs her guitar from the trunk before slamming it shut causing her brother to send her a look, she smiles at him innocently as he locks the car.
"So we'll be meeting our tour guides in the main office, there is a separate one for each of us seeming as we're all in different grades" Mack explains to her siblings as the three of them stand side by side and look up at the ugly brown building before them. Kyla shivers, public school. She had never set foot in a public school once in her lifetime because of her Father's successful business. "I miss private school" Mack mumbles as the three of them start toward the front doors.
Kyla follows in silence as she listens to her sister voice her complaints about the public school, how the colours were ugly, how she missed her cheer team back in New York and how she actually missed the uniforms they wore purely because she looked good in it. But, she was grateful that she could now wear her designer clothes all the time. Kyla loved but also hated her sister, she was a spoiled brat at times. This time being one of them. Kyla herself had designer items bought for her by her Father, but she rarely used or wore them. In fact the only item she used was the gucci wallet that Spencer had given her as a birthday gift. It was shoved at the bottom of her bag underneath her numerous amounts of sheet music.
Mack finally guides them into the main office where a woman behind the desk greets the 3 siblings before dishing out stacks of sheets to them, a map, a schedule and finally a list of extra curricular activities to join.
Kyla shoves all but her schedule into her bag before the door opens to reveal a blonde haired girl dressed in pink. Kyla can't help but cringe, she hated the colour pink. Nothing in her closet was pink, not even her underwear.
"Ah Betty, you'll be taking Veronica Lodge and Kyla Matthews here, they're in some of your classes" the receptionist says to the girl, but Kyla barely hears the woman after she says the name Veronica Lodge.
Kyla turns to the sets of chairs where the raven haired girl stands up, smiling at her. She feels sick. Veronica Lodge had ruined her life back at the academy in New York. Kyla had accidentally knocked paint onto Veronica's 'new' dress and the raven haired girl had set out to literally destroy her life. Kyla found herself with no friends and the laughing stock of the academy. Which is why she was totally on board to move to the tiny town to escape the witches talons.
"Mack, Spencer! No way you guys hey!" The raven haired girl greets the other siblings before pulling the pair in for hugs as Kyla ignore her, glaring holes into her head as the Betty girl watches, "you guys have to text me later so we can catch up!" Veronica tells them.
"We should start the tour before classes start" Betty tells her shyly and Veronica turns around to smile at her, nodding.
"Lead the way" Veronica smiles to her. Betty smiles to the raven haired girl before turning to smile at Kyla, the three exit the office as 2 other students enter, Kyla can only presume for them to be her siblings tour guides.
She barely registers anything as Betty begins talking about the schools history, Veronica cutting her off to comment about the decoration and colour, just like her sister had done as they had walked into the school. Kyla rolls her eyes as she adjusts her grip on her guitar case before a brown haired boy hurries over, joining the trio.
He introduces himself as Kevin Keller, telling Kyla and Veronica about the social scene. Kyla stops listening until she hears him say "is it true what they say about your Father?" He asks veronica and Kyla nearly snorts out loud in amusement.
"That he's the devil incarnate?" Veronica asks, "I stand by my Father" she says proudly, "does everyone here know?" She asks as she looks at Betty who hesitantly nods. Veronica sighs in annoyance, "wonderful, ten minutes in and I'm already the blue jasmine of Riverdale high"
Kyla can't hold it in any longer and she releases a laugh causing the other 3 teens to look at her, "a priss like you is going to stand out among public school kids regardless Lodge, so buckle up your seat belt and enjoy the scenery, because I think you're gonna be here a while" Kyla sneers to the girl before turning on her heel and marching down the hallway as Veronica Lodge gapes at her retreating figure.
