The car pulls up to the curb and I lift my head up from the top of the seat. The driver and I exchange goodbyes and I step onto the concrete driveway. Through the window, I see the living room light on and as I shift closer to the door, with the car engine fading. I see Justin slouched on the brown, leather couch, hands filled with the remote and a bowl of popcorn.
My hand grasps the doorknob and I twist it, letting myself in. I sense his gaze but I try avoiding eye contact,
"How was the library?"
He asks concerned and I shrug, walking towards him and plopping down beside him."F*cking great"
I murmur, Reaching out in front for the lone hair band on the coffee table. I gathered my hair into a loose ponytail."Hey, what did I say about swearing?"
He jokes, but then his eyebrow raises. I smile with a roll of my eyes."I'm going to sleep"
I reply; changing the subject. I manage to stand back up, with a loud yawn and walk over, across the room to the honey, tinted steps."Don't let the bedbugs bite."
He yells over to me and I shake my head. I take my first step on the cold wood and I get a chill. Doesn't take me long to reach the top and then I'm off to my room. As I close the door firmly behind me, I'm met with the beautiful sight of my warm and firm bed.I look around but something doesn't seem right, noticing an object on the end side of my bed. My eyes widen with confusion, staring at my flannel, remembering it fell on the street.
I pick it off from the soft surface and throw it down on a chair.
***
I took some time to wash up in the complementary bathroom across the hall and I climb into my pajamas. I slowly jump into bed and wrap the soft comforters around my body. My legs ached and so did my head, the thought of taking medicine crossing my head but I banish it.
I begin thinking about the incident, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like a nightmare. My arm extends to the side and I turn the light off. The dark surrounds me, causing my eyes to flicker closed.
