      10 Years later

Rebecca's POV  I sat down at a table in the library. In my hands, there was a book about Neverland. It was an old book, and I almost hadn't found it. The library in our town was huge, so it was easy for books to get lost, even with the sharp minded librarian.                                                                                         The book was beautiful. It was was a dark green leather, with the word NEVERLAND imprinted on it in gold. It seemed familiar though. Opening it, I read the words written on the page before the story began, and what it said jarred me.                                                          In this book, I tell you the real story of Neverland.                                                                                               Neverland is not all that it seems.
Do not go there if you can avoid it.                                                                                                                                 If you can't, good luck. Never before had I found a book that gave me any reason to believe that Neverland was actually real. After all these years, my belief that that night had actually happened was waning. Nobody believed me. They all thought that it was a dream. And after all these years, I was beginning to believe that they were right.                                       But it's not like I wanted to believe that it was a dream, but, it's been 10 years. Wouldn't the Shadow have come back, if it wasn't a dream? Right? I read on.                                                                  The book told me of a Neverland that I had no idea existed. The book told me that Peter Pan wasn't the person that Disney said he was. That he was dark. Evil. But the funny thing is, is that I felt like I'd read this book before. A long time ago. But I don't remember reading it.                                As the book progressed, the tale got darker. Peter Pan was looking for the Heart of the Truest Believer. He needed it to stay young on Neverland forever. This bit of information also seemed familiar. As I read on, all of a sudden it hit me. I had read this book before. 10 years ago. It was the book that had told me how to summon the Shadow. But, what confused me was why I wanted to summon the Shadow. Nothing in this book made me particularly anxious to head to Neverland. I thought that this version of Neverland was terrifying. Nothing in me wanted to go there. Until I reached the last page.                                               Like some of his other family members,                                                                                                                         Pan likes making deals.                                                                                                                                                   If you want him to leave your family alone,                                                                                                               you can make him a deal.                                                                                                                                                   What you offer can vary.                                                                                                                                  But otherwise, the possibility that Pan will take                                                                                                             male members of your family goes up.    I have a little brother. I must have wanted to make a deal with Pan. I don't know what deal I could have possibly wanted to make, though, because first of all, it was ten years ago. I don't remember. Second of all, I was six years old at the time. What deal could I have wanted to make? As I sat there pondering, the librarian walked up to me. "I'm sorry, my dear, but we are closing," the older lady came up to me, and smiled in a gentle way. "Did you want to check that out, dear?" I nodded my head.

After checking it out I walked home. My house isn't far from the library. "Rebecca! Where are you? Dinner is ready!"

"Gosh, you don't have to yell at me. I'm right here," I told my little brother as I came into the yard. Jake looked at me, a little annoyed.

"I know, but yelling is more fun. Gosh." I smiled at him. So over dramatic.

After dinner, I went upstairs to my bedroom with my book. Halfway through reading it again, Jake interrupted me. "What are you doing?"

"Um, reading. Nothing too interesting," I lied, slamming the book shut. He ran up to me, snatching the book away from me.

"Neverland? What kind of name is that? Oh, wait, this is about your Shadow obsession, isn't it?" I grabbed at the book, and failed. At fourteen, Jake was lanky and tall.

"Give that back! Besides, it's not an obsession. I only want to know what happened that night. I need to know," I said, as Jake sighed and handed me the green book.

"You know, you've never actually told me the story. I've heard it, but never from you. Can you tell me about it?" Nodding, I sat down on the bed, and patted the spot next to me.

"Well, I was rather little. About six. Anyway, I had read this book. I thought that I needed to go to Neverland to make a deal with Peter Pan." I breathed in deeply.

"Why? What kind of deal you would want to make with Peter Pan?" Jake asked. I went on.

"Because, in the back of this book," I lifted the book in my hands. "Is a warning. It says that Pan might take you. At the time, you were four, and Mom was pregnant with Charlie. I wasn't gonna let Pan try to take you. I had to protect you. So, I opened my window, and called the Shadow. It took a while, but he showed up. But he left, and I'm not sure why. I wish I knew," I finished.

"Isn't Neverland only for boys?"Jake asked.

"Well yes, but Wendy went to Neverland. Although Pan captured her, according to this book, but he didn't know he'd need her when she got there," I frowned. "That can't be it." Jake's face lit up.

"Yes, it can be. Wendy had her brothers with her, right? At least in the Disney story." I nodded, opening the book, flipping around to find the spot.

"Yes. Her brothers and her friend were in the room with her when she went the first time. But she came back because the Shadow wanted a boy. In fact, the Shadow wanted her brothers. So, they tried to keep him out. But it was no use. So, her friend, Bealfire, saved the boys, going to Neverland in their place," I said, finally finding the spot.  As I talked, Jake had gotten very exited.

"Maybe you need to have a boy with you. Maybe when the Shadow noticed that it was only you, he realized that there was no boy. So he left."

"Perhaps. But there is no way to know," I said.

"Actually, there is." At first, confusion flooded my brain. All of a sudden, all became clear. Grabbing Jake's arm, I practically shouted my disapproval. Jake simply shook his head.

"I gotta find out." With that, he hopped up and ran to his room. Opening the window, he shouted those terrible words. "I believe."

At first, nothing happened. Then the Shadow flew in. Jake turned to me, grinned, and said "Well, looks like I was right." But then, he turned back to the Shadow.

"Jake, no!" I warned.

"It's okay, Bekka."

But it didn't seem okay. It was like the Shadow had put my brother under a spell. "Jake, please. You can't go." But it was like he didn't even hear me. Instead, he reached his hand out to Shadow, and flew away with him.
