Chapter Thirty-One
Robert made his way down the halls to Elise's bedchamber he figured that she'd be there. He didn't get very far when he was stopped by Evelyn.
"Evelyn," Robert paused to ask her. "Is Elise in her chamber?"
"Aye," Evelyn told him with a frown.
"Thank ye," Robert smiled at her and tried to step around her when she blocked his way putting her hands on her hips in defiance.
"Are ye going to say good-bye?" She asked him still frowning, side-stepping him when he wanted to get around her.
"Ah.....nae.....tis I have something to ask her," Robert said with a twinkle. "Do ye have a spare plaid that I can borrow?"
Looking intrigued now, Evelyn relaxed her body and stopped side-stepping him. Instead of hands on her hips, she crossed them over her chest. "And what did ye have planned with a Campbell plaid?" she rudely asked him.
"Well......since I plan on wearing your clan's colours..........twould be good if I ask Elise to marry me......again.......wearing one," Robert grinned down at Evelyn knowing that she knew why Elise was upset. Thinking that this bit of news would make his sister-in-law-to-be very happy.
"Do ye mean it?" Evelyn asked him, her eyes wide with joy.
"Aye....I do," Robert said seriously. "Twas a fool I was earlier on.......I plan on making amends."
Not expecting this...but Evelyn launched herself into Robert's arms and hugged him fiercely. "Och....ye will make Elise so very happy Robert," she mumbled against his chest.
Robert just chuckled....he wasn't use to female attention for there were very few at Castle McKenna...and living here would mean a wife, a mother-in-law and a sister-in-law. He might have to converse with Ian on how to deal with so many women at once.
Kissing the top of her head, and pulling out of the hug........Robert tilted her chin up......"Nae Evelyn....tis Elise who will make me very happy. Now....do ye have a plaid I can borrow?" he asked her again.
"Aye.....come with me," Evelyn told him as she grabbed his hand and dragged past Elise's chamber and down to her own. Opening the door she ran over to one of her trunks and pulled out a new plaid.
"Ye may keep that one Robert, tis no one's," she grinned, barely able to conceal her happiness.
Robert pulled off the McKenna plaid and then Evelyn helped him put on the Campbell one. "Och....ye are a bonny knight Robert!" Evelyn said stepping back to see her handy-work.
"Well," Robert said looking himself over. "Twill take time to get use to, but I know that I will be happy here." Robert stepped forward now, took Evelyn's hand and kissed her knuckles. "I thank ye Evelyn."
Blushing...she shyly nodded to him and just as he was about to leave.....she called him back...."Robert," she rushed out. She ran over to the side of her bed where a bouquet of wildflowers were and gave them to Robert. "Elise was no happy with ye.....perhaps she would enjoy the flowers."
Accepting the flowers, Robert winked at Evelyn and went to find Elise.
He knocked several times and he was just about to walk away when the door creaked open just enough for Elise to see who it was. When Elise saw the flowers and the Campbell plaid, she opened the door a few inches more. Her heart raced, she knew by the looks of him that he had changed his mind but oh....she would make him suffer first.
