“I'm not stupid,
you hear me?”
“You left me!”
You close your
eyes and take
deep breaths.
“Fine,” you say.
And just last
night you were
drunk and crying
and I thought
there were so
many tears. But
this is worse.
I set my
hand on your
shoulder and say,
“You're not stupid.”
“Too late. I
am. You're right.”
You shut your
eyes and I
can almost hear
your thoughts echoing:
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I know it
wasn't really me,
so who made
you believe it?
