"Okay child, okay...um...do you mind extinguishing those flames?" She said weakly as she backed away to the door of my cell. "My name is Marianne, your people attacked him...I will find him...but before I do." A strange feeling came over me, one I couldn't control. With one strong flap of my wings, flames went roaring at her. She ducked out of the way, and his behind the operating table that claimed me since day one. "That's it! You will do as I say!" She yelled, and suddenly grew five times her normal size. Her body glowed red, and her nails became claws sharp as knives. "Down now!" She bellowed, but I was done playing guinea pig. If they wanted to do something to me, then it was going to be by force.
She swatted at me like I was a fly, and I would weave out of the way in between her giant fingers, grazing her hands with my wings. She screamed in pain as huge blisters formed on her fingers. "Stupid girl! Get over here!" I felt something push out of my hand, and a blinding white light erupted from it. "This game has gone on long enough!" And she curled her hand into a giant fist, and brought it down on my back, and I felt the familiar sting of a needle go through my spine.
"Hello child. See this needle? We have a mix of different animal DNA and let it form in different climates. We choose at random which one we will use on subjects such as yourself. I know choosing at random doesn't sound too scientific, but for us it shows what you can handle. If you survive the effects of this concoction, then we will keep giving it to you until your DNA binds with it, and you mutate. It's all a bunch of Russian roulette, only our lives aren't on the line, yours is. Any questions? No? Good. Now this will hurt, into the spine we go." A sharp pain surged through my back, and up my neck. The pain went from sharp, to a burn. It felt as though blades and pieces of glass were on fire and were being shoved into my back. "Help me! Help me! Stop please, I'm begging you stop! Help me! Somebody help me!" The burning covered my body, and tears burned my face. The sizzle of burning flesh was nauseating to not just me, but to some of what I'm guessing were new recruits. "Put her in ice, and keep the ice coming. I have a feeling she won't survive the night without it. We can't lose another one." Said the man who was talking to me before. I recognized him. He was there that day; the day I was picked. The day that I was forced to leave everyone I love. He took me away from Domanik...he will pay for what he has done. The corruption of his deeds will cease to exist.
"It's boiling! Get more ice! We need anything cold! Oh this child will be the death of us during the summer." Said a woman with red hair, her face covered with a white mask. She wore a nurse outfit you would've seen in old movies. Her accent was thick, she sounded as if she were from France. "Where is Mr. Hernandez?! He will want to know of this." Said the woman. The man from before walked in. He wore a grey suit that matched the color of his hair, and threatening eyes. He looked like he was in his late forties. "So how's my little angel?" He said caressing my cheek. "I am not your angel." I growled, resisting the urge to bite his hand. "Not yet, but you will. Give it time."
"I refuse to be your angel." I muttered. "Oh is that so? Well I'm afraid you do not have a choice. I know when I die, I will go to hell, just as you have wished many times." I felt the urge to burn him, but I knew I couldn't. He might go after Domanik, and that was something I couldn't risk. "I am in very big trouble with the government, which is why my laboratory had to be hidden in these mountains, so while I live, I need to be protected. That is where you come in. I need you to protect me from being killed when I leave the safety of my mountain home." He clapped his hands together, and gave a slight smile. "So, if you refuse to be "my Angel," then I would have no choice but to kill you." He leaned in close to my face, the smell of stale cigars suffocated me. "I'd rather die." I said spitting in his face. His face reddened, and he slapped me with all his strength. I could feel a bruise forming on the side of my face. Shaken, I looked up at him, "You die, then who will protect your loved ones?....who will protect that boy you mumble about in your sleep?" He smirked as he walked to the doorway of the cell. "Thank long and hard about your decisions in here child, it would mean life and death for not just you." He growled and walked out.
I was thrown into my cell again, the pain in my stomach becoming unbearable. I hurled violently in the corner of the room. My throat burned. I curled up and cried. I felt so helpless. I sang quietly to myself, trying to cope with the pain I felt inside. "Maybe there's a god above, but all I've ever learned from love, was how to shoot somebody down who outdrew you."
"And it's not a cry you hear at night, it's not somebody who's seen the light, it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah."
