The Day of the Kidnapping // Part One
"You're listening to London's Radio Station and that song we just played was Happy by Pharrell Williams. What a beautiful day it is today, if you're leaving the house for a day out or going into to work this weekend just take a good glimpse out the window or step outside because the sun has come out to say hello. The weather forecast is, it's going to stay like this all day! Now, the next song we're going to play is-"
"That's good. Did you hear that, Aurora?" My mother asked as she lowered the volume on the radio. I was too busy being occupied by the passing sights outside the car to reply as we drove along the main road. "Darling, it's wonderful weather today. How about we scrap shopping plans and head out to the park?"
I nodded.
I didn't really care. Wherever we were it would be the same. I mean sure, the sun was bright and beautiful. It was only June and in England it's usually still grey and occasionally rainy but it seemed today the weather had given us a break and had decided to give us a little taste of summer. However, for me the day would end the same.
With me crying myself to sleep.
Not a healthy way for a thirteen year old to live right? And so no matter how the day went or what I did. In the end it wouldn't change anything. I watched as the tree's flew by and the birds seemed to follow the car. I wished so bad that I could be one of those birds so I could just fly away to wherever I wanted.
Mum soon pulled up in the car park. "Go off and do what you like for three hours tops okay? At lunch time you come back to the car." She said with her strict tone as she got a lipstick out of her bag.
That wasn't a good thing. Lipstick was fine but this was the lipstick. The red, mattifying and expensive one. The one she used when she was going to go out and flirt.
I sighed and opened the car door. "Whatever."
"And don't even think about coming to find me, if you interfere like you did with that cute guy in the coffee shop last week... I won't be so lenient with you." She sneered as she puckered her lips at her self in the rear view mirror and then got out of the car. Noticing people that were near by and casually looking at us, mum came over and kissed my on the head. "See you soon, my Darling."
I frowned at her as she walked away into town which was conveniently next to the park. Guess she was still going shopping, she just wanted to dump me somewhere.
I rolled my eyes and kicked a stone as I headed into the park. Of course, because of the weather everyone would be here in the park on a Saturday. Including lots and lots of annoying little children. I was going to find somewhere to just sit and wait when in the corner of my eyes I caught a glimpse of pink and I found my feet taking me there.
It was a massive flower patch of carnations, my absolute favourite flower of summer. I fell to my knees and took one to my nose, deeply inhaling. I always wished I could describe the smell, especially since I had recently noticed that the big floristry industry was breeding the smell out of them leaving the beauties sterile.
I began collecting just a couple of them in my hand, admiring the darker pink outlining on the flowers, a small extra detail that made them even more beautiful. Once I had a good handful I went to stand up and have a look at the darker and more red ones in another patch when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up uninterested though bothered by the interruption, to see a youngish guy maybe in his twenties smiling down at me.
"I'm sorry I was just walking by and heard your lovely singing voice, what's your name young lady?" He said sweetly but I was taken aback. Had I been so distracted I had begun singing? And even if I had, my mother told me my singing was dreadful whenever I did...
I bit my lip. "Uhm.."
His eyes widened. "Oh, I'm sorry, are your parents around? I should talk to them first." He said taking a step back. I shyly shook my head and looked to the ground.
"I'm on my own." I mumbled.
"Ah okay. Well, I just wanted to say that my wife Tammy over there and I do singing in the park on weekends. I only went to get some drinks for us to take a break when I walked past you. You really are very good at singing." He said with a smile as he gestured for his wife who was sprawled out on the grass next to a couple set up microphones and speakers. I guess he was telling the truth.
"Hiya" The pretty lady, Tammy said when she had joined us. "I'm Tammy and this is John. Oh wow, those are very pretty flowers."
I shone her a toothy grin. "Thank you. I think so too."
"I can see you're very busy but you're welcome to come and join us in a few songs anytime you like." John said with a genuine smile.
"Ah, are you a singer?" Tammy smiled with her question, curiosity sparked in her eyes.
I shook my head but John disagreed by shaking his head with a little chuckle. "No, she's quite the star." To which I just shrugged not knowing what else to say.
"What's your name, honey?" Tammy asked softly.
I fiddled with some petals on one of the carnations nervously. "Uh, Aurora."
"Ah okay that's a very pretty name." Tammy replied and then she took a glance at her watch. "John and I have to go back to singing now but as he said- come over to us anytime." John nodded in agreement and then they both left with small waves.
I looked down to the flowers in my hand and thought hard.
I guess it couldn't hurt to go and join them. Mum wouldn't be expecting me for a good few hours still and I needed to pass the time. I didn't know I was good at singing though I did hum a lot around the house. To which mum would always tell me to shut up.
Putting the flowers gently in to my pocket, allowing the flower heads to peek out so they wouldn't get squished, I skipped over to John and Tammy with an excited grin on my face.
