"You found him?!"

A wide eyed Elena slapped me in my arm.

"Why didn't you tell me?!" She kept slapping my arm. "Could you be any louder?!" I half shouted, half whispered. I sighed. "I don't want my father to find out." Elena gasped. "Why? Are you ashamed of your soulmate?" She hugged a pillow. "I'd never be ashamed of Jaeger." She sighed dreamily, and I guessed Jaeger was the name of her soulmate.

"Well, not unless he's a hunter, much more a Maxima, you're good to go." I said sarcastically. I don't know how, but her widened eyes opened wider. And her jaw dropped, too. "You... mean..." She stuttered.

"Yep." I said popping the 'p'.

"Caine is my soulmate." My inner vampire goddess purred in satisfaction. Her mouth was still open, so I put my index finger in her chin, and pushed it up to close her mouth. "You're going to catch flies with your mouth, Elena." She rolled her eyes at me.

"When did this happen?! I mean, when did you see him?" She was as curious as a cat. "Your birthday party." She gasped. "There was a hunter on my party?! In the club?!" I covered her mouth to attempt to silence her. "So loud. Yes, there was a hunter. But he had no intention of killing anyone that night. He thought he was in some regular club." I explained. "But how did he cross our borders?"

"I need you to keep a secret, okay?" She nodded like a kid accepting a deal. "Okay. I think someone or a group inside our coven is planning to overthrow my father in his position right now. I don't know who or what." I looked at her and she was silent.

I noticed she wasn't shocked or anything. I looked at her suspiciously. My instincts told there was something she was hiding from me. "Elena, you're keeping something from me, aren't you?" Her eyes showed a little hint of guilt. "No. I mean why would I keep something from you? You're my best friend." I put on my I-believe-you face, but I tried to change the topic hoping that she'd forget about it.

"So, Jaeger..." Her eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas. For an hour and a half, we talked about her soulmate. How he was so amazing and all that shit. I tried to sound interested because what kind of friend am I if I don't? But I really need to find out what she's hiding. It was midnight and she told me she needed to get back to her soulmate. I told her to go. I wanted to be alone, anyways.

Since it was hours until morning, I shifted to the borders where the corpses were piled up. Still, no one was guarding this part of the border. It really was suspicious. I need to tell my father about this. I examined one of the corpses again, hoping to find a clue on who did this. I realized the corpse looked a lot like Caine. I guessed he was his brother. My chest ached again, but I breathed in and out and ignored the pain. First night and it feels like this. How much more for the next few days?

Sooner or later, my father is going to find out. I noticed the corpse had a silver shuriken in his jacket pocket. I took it, and there was black fluid on the blade. Vampire blood, I thought. It was dried up, but one taste, and I'll know who did this. Thank God for Caine's smart brother. I kept the shuriken in my pocket for later examination. "Thank you, Maxima. I never knew your name." I sighed and put the body back in the pile. I shifted, thinking about getting back to the manor, but to my surprise, I shifted at the cliff where Caine and I made our pact. My chest hurt again, this time, it was too much. I tried to steady my breathing.

"Not now, please, not here."

I struggled breathing and when I did, I smelled garlic. Fuck. Hunters. I looked around, but nobody was here. My vision was now blurry because of the garlic. My knees buckled and I fell to the floor. I heard footsteps. The garlic scent was getting stronger, and my nose was burning, as well as my eyes. I closed my eyes and felt a kick to my stomach. Fuck. And then another to my chest. I wheezed, and struggled for breath. I cleared my mind and I put all my strength in healing. Thankfully, I healed, and I opened my eyes, he had a hunter's mask. I willed everything to move in slow motion, and when he was about to kick me, I grabbed his foot, tugged it and he fell on his ass.

I quickly got up. But he was fast. He threw a handful of garlic dust and I was blinded. I heard something drop near my feet. I quickly grabbed it and shifted back to the manor. I was coughing when I got to the front door. My father was with the council, showing their way out, when they all saw me. My father ran to me. "Arianna!" I fell on my knees and I wheezed for air. "What happened?!" Everyone dropped their belongings and gathered around me. I couldn't form words, and tears were forming in my eyes. I realized I was holding a stake, and not just any stake.

Caine'ssilver stake.
