"You saw your dad do that once?" I asked. She nodded. "What does that mean? Your dad yelled at and hit a teacher?" Bookworm asked. "No!" Mellow sighed. "He did that to my momma. He was yelling. And so was she. I was watching, hiding behind a wall. They didn't notice me. He started throwing his arms around and mom said something." She shook her head. "He didn't like it. Then, he slapped her. And hit her. And again. Again... Until she was on the floor, crying. There was blood in her mouth." Bookworm and I looked at each other, then back at Mellow.
"When things went quiet, I tried my hardest not to make a sound. But I couldn't. I was already crying. He saw me, and started walking toward me. I couldn't move, and I wasn't even looking at him. But my mom was trying to get up again. She opened her mouth and told me to run. So I did. But he was going after me, screaming and cussing. When I ran out the house he picked up a bottle and threw it at me. He missed. But it scared me. So I fell, and tried to get up. But he was right there." I couldn't believe it. That's one of the most scariest stories I've ever heard. And I liked scary movies. What's worse is that this is true. And it happened to the nice girl sitting ahead of me.
"What happened next?" Bookworm asked, almost whispering. "He grabbed me, threw me across of his shoulder like I was a towel. I was crying and hitting his back. He says 'You'll only make this worse for everyone, Rain.' So he walks back in the house, closes and locks the door. My mom is up, she has a baseball bat. Telling him to let go of me, or she'll call the cops and stuff..." She sighed. Then she moved her bangs, and actually revealed her eyes. They were a crystal blue. But one if them was swollen and black. I'd never really looked at her face before, but I now noticed her paleness as well. And she had a cut on her lip that seemed to be healing. That was an old cut.
Bookworm had stood up, her mouth wide open. Rain immediately let go of her bangs, which fell back onto her eyes.
She rest her head on the desk and kicked her feet as if on a swing. Like nothing had ever happened.
