At sunset, we grabbed out bags and set foot outside the front door.
The city was loud. Sirens was one of the many sounds we heard.
Further down the street, towards the school, buildings were burning and people were running around. It was a total chaos.
The traffic was stuck too.We walked across the street, towards the forest. It was a field between us and that forest. Anyone can see us and run us down if they want to. I grabbed Sam's hand as we walked. I'm sure he felt that I was shaking.
"Don't worry, Princess. Everything will be alright in a couple of weeks and we can head back home." He said.
Rafe was taking the lead together with Harry and Chloe. Behind them, Nathan, Elena and Julia. Sam and I were last. I felt very bad about this. I was afraid someone would see us.
And as I feared, I heard someone shout.
"There are people on the fields!" The voice shouted and I heard trucks turning our direction. It felt like my heart stop.
"Run." I said.
"Kate, calm do-" Sam tried to calm me down but Rafe interrupted him.
"Fucking run!" He shouted and everyone was off running towards the forest. I heard gunshots behind us as we ran for our lives.
Bullet after bullet the soldiers fired at us.
The forest was just out of reach and I thought we made it but unfortunately, one of the bullets hit my leg and I stumbled down to the ground.Sam shouted my name and helped me up.
He carried me the few meters that was left to the forest and took cover behind a massive rock. He put me down and I leaned against the cold stone."Fuck.." I mumbled and grabbed my leg.
"What's going on?" Rafe questioned, pushing through the crowd. "We gotta move!"
"She's been shot." Sam answered. "I can't carry her, then we'll get nowhere."
The trucks got closer and I saw Rafe panic as he was thinking. He put his hands on the back of his head as he stared at me.
"We both carry her." He said after a few moments. Sam nodded and helped me up.
I leaned on both Rafe and Sam's shoulders and we were off again. Not as fast this time, but fast enough to get deeper into the forest.

After at least 30 minutes half running, half walking, we found a cave. I couldn't hear gunfire or trucks by this point. Not even people. The forest was quiet.
I sat down as they made up a fire inside the cave. I sighed and rubbed my leg. It hurt.
"Now, what to do with you." Harry sighed and sat down besides me.
"Leave me here to die." I scoffed.
"Nah, we're not there yet." He chuckled.
Then Julia came up to me and sat down in front of me.
"I can take the bullet out." She said and I frowned.
"How?" Harry questioned.
"I have some morphine in my bag, and my mom was a doctor. I've been learning a few things and I'm sure I can get it out." She responded.
"Well, I've got nothing to lose but my leg." I said back.
"You'll lose it if we don't get the bullet out."
Julia helped me get the bullet out. It was hurting a lot, but the pain was barely there with the morphine. I was barely there. My mind was off to somewhere else. Sam held my hand. I didn't look at my leg.

15 minutes later, she was done. The bullet was out and she patched up my leg. Now, it needed to heal.
I thanked Julia, and so did Sam.
"We need to rest." Elena said and we all nodded at her command.
I snuggled with Sam close to the cave entrance. I heard his heartbeat, along with sound of water and owls. It was peaceful.
All though I reminded myself that this moment will not last forever.
Before we know it, we will be fighting for our lives. Every move we make, will be hanging on a thin thread between life and death.
I know Sam is willing to die for me, and I would do anything to keep him alive.
