"Sorry, this isn't really much of a date, is it?" You tried not to look disappointed even though he should be the one looking like that. "I can't leave the hospital..." The hospital cafeteria could hardly pass as a romantic place your mind repeated back at you.

Sans waved his hand dismissively. "don't worry about it, kid. besides what's even a real date anyways?" You saw him staring at you intently. "it's the thoughts the counts, right?"

Just like that you brightened up, "Yeah." You wanted to know more about the skeleton that helped ease your loneliness, even if he didn't know that yet. "So, anything I should know about you? You could be a serial killer and lead me to my death."

"now that would be just grave, wouldn't it? nah, i'm no serial killer. it's a little tomb much even for me."

You couldn't help yourself but let out a giggle. "You think you're a funny guy, don't you?" Well, if he does, you don't disagree, that was pretty good. It's been forever since you laughed even a little.

"more like a punny guy." He gives you a wink in the form of one closed eye socket and you thought your heart skipped a beat for a moment. His face is actually very malleable now that you think about it.

You hoped no one heard your loud snickers because you've always been a bit self conscious. Then again, the cafeteria's noise would drown out your laughter. As your laughter died down, he proceeded to tell you a little bit about himself. "i like puns and ketchup. i have a brother who's the coolest person i've ever known and what they call space up here is a concept i like a lot." He took a sip of his warm coffee and propped his chin in the palm of his hand. "how about you?"

You started twirling a piece of your hair, a habit you've picked up while talking to people you like. "There's really nothing much to me. I've been here since I can remember and I spend my time in the waiting room often." You looked at him and quickly averted your eyes when you saw him looking at you very intently, like he's actually interested in everything you say. "Everyone here is nice and all, but I'm actually lonely..." You finished your coffee and decided that you'll throw the cup away later.

"no one stays very long, huh?" There's something in his voice that told you that he knew that feeling all too well. It worried you.

Before you could comment on that, he said out loud, "you're cute, y'know?"

You felt your heart skipped a beat this time and the tugging at your chest intensified. What is it that kept doing that? Why did it start happening when you made contact with him? A pink tinge made its way onto your face. Damn those blood vessels! How could they betray you like this!

"You're just saying that, don't say things you don't mean..." You tried to deflect his words by negating them.

"but i do mean it."

"...Are you sure you're not a serial killer? Cause you're killing me here." You hid your face in your hands as best as you can without being too obvious.

He chuckled at your flustered form and moved to stand up, picking up both his and your empty cups. "hey, it's getting past visiting hours, i need to go see a friend of mine. i'll throw away the cups too. you okay by yourself?" The concern in his voice made you want to tell him to stay, but that would be selfish. You couldn't shake the feeling that this won't be the last time you'll be seeing him and you hoped not.

"Yeah... I'll be fine. Go see your friend! I'm sure they've waited long enough." As he moved past you, you couldn't help yourself and grabbed the back of his hoodie. It was soft, unlike your room's blanket. He turned back with a confused expression. "Come visit me again?"

"yeah, sure." His smile softened and it was forever engraved into your mind. "see you later." You let go and watched him leave the noisy cafeteria. "See you too..."

The feeling in your chest became stronger with every step he made away from you.
