With the permission of my mother and Calum's aunt, he offered to give me a tour of the campus. He said it wasn't really as bad as I made it out to be, and I could agree. I thought it would be like as it had been in the lobby the whole way through, but most of the residence building was okay. He explained the sun room was his favourite, and I could understand why. Windows lined the walls, hardwood was spread across the floor, and there were deep and vibrant colours everywhere.
"How long have you been working here?" I asked him.
"Since I was sixteen or so. At first I was too scrawny to help with luggage, so I mainly helped the janitors, and on the down-low, I helped the third and fourth year students clean up after parties," he said, shaking his head. "I don't remember why, though, they were shitty tippers."
"Most of the people in residence normally leave after the first year, to either to go home and commute, or get an apartment on their own. I don't have a choice but to live here, just like the rest of the scholarship kids, but there's a few people who have stuck around willingly."
"Who would willingly stay in residence? " I retorted.
"There's Michael for starters. He's super chill, plays a shit ton of Xbox, he's probably stayed because he doesn't have to pay the electricity bill. My best mate, Luke, is here on scholarship, like me, but he's really nerdy so it's for having high marks or something. Few others too...Mariah, Autumn, Stella, and Luke's girlfriend Anna comes around a lot as well...oh-and Ash."
"Ash?" I repeated, cocking an eyebrow.
"Well his name is Ashton. We just call him Ash a lot..." Calum continued to ramble on and I exhaled loudly.
I realized Calum had stopped talking and was now looking at me for a response. I snapped my head up and said, "He sounds nice."
"Yeah, he is," he said, fiddling with his keys. "He's kinda weird though." He looked up at me again. "You wanna meet them?"
"Oh, those people you just talked about? Uh, sure?"
"You don't sound very certain," he laughed.
He brought me through multiple more orange coloured hallways, until we reached the main room. It was empty for the most part, a few students sitting on the couches reviewing their notes, and a few watching the match on the TV. Calum looked longingly at it and I laughed, "Go find out the score and you can catch up in a few?"
"Really?" he beamed. I nodded, and he said, "Just go through that back door, and look for the table with two people with multicoloured hair."
Tugging on my sleeve nervously, I did as he said and went into the room beside us. Luckily, just as I found their table, he came running back. "I can't believe we're doing so shitty today...anyways, let's go?"
Three girls; one blonde, one brunette, and one blue-haired, sat with who I assumed were to be Luke and Michael. They were sat in a circle, with two seats to spare. Calum began walking over, and I soon followed.
"Hey guys," he greeted them and waved. Both the blonde boy and girl looked up, waving back.
"Hello!" the petite blonde chirped. "I'm Stella! What's your name? I love your shirt! Is your hair colour natural?"
"Jesus, Stel, chill." the other blonde sighed, rolling his eyes slightly. Stella turned completely away from him, folding her arms under her chest.
"I do not need to "chill", Lucas. You need to learn to be friendly, like me." she replied.
They stared each other down, as if having some kind of telepathic conversation, and ended it by both scoffing obnoxiously. I heard the brunette girl beside me laugh softly.
"Sibling rivalry," she commented, chuckling. I smiled warmly.
"Funny to watch when you don't have any siblings." I agreed.
"Funnier to watch when you're the oldest of four," she grinned, waving her right hand. "I'm Autumn. And you are..."
"Alexis," I replied, returning the wave.
"I dated an Alexis once," Michael randomly stated, completely deadpan. "We broke up because she cheated on me."
"Oh, uh, wow," I said meekly, my eyes widening. "I'm sorry?"
"It's alright," he shrugged, redirecting his eyes to the gaming console in his hands. "She was a crazy bitch anyway." Luke muttered something inaudible, and smacked the paler boy upside the head. "What was that for?!"
"That's Michael," the blue-haired one spoke. "He's blunt."
Michael glared at her. "That's Mariah, she speaks out of turn."
"Everyone has their faults."
I sat in the chair in between Autumn's and the other one that was unoccupied. Mariah and him started arguing, and I only heard bits of god, you are such a dick sometimeaand Mariah please now is not the time to talk about my dick and why am I even dating you and Luke's interception of both of you shut up.
In the midst of giggling quietly to myself, someone tapped me on the shoulder lightly.
"Sorry, but I think you might be sitting in my seat."
