Yuri Umeki entered his classroom, a sense of dread overwhelmed him. He was in the dreaded Class 3-3.
No, an assuring voice in the back of his mind said. It's not like it happens every year. So there's no need to worry.
"Ah, Yuri Umeki." A woman in her upper forties said. "Welcome to Class 3-3. I am Mrs. Sato, your homeroom teacher. Over at the desk with attendance is Miss Okura. Take a seat... next to Ms. Fuyuko Harada." Mrs. Sato pointed to a girl in the middle section of desks, chatting with friends."
"Thank you." He walked over and sat down. "Hello." Yuri said to Fuyuko, but she seemed engrossed in her conversation.
He felt a tap on his shoulder, a classmate was smiling at him.
"Hey," the boy said. "I'm Tamaki Enoki."
"Yuri Umeki."
They shook hands.
"We've got a small class, eh?"
"I did notice that."
"Apparently our head of countermeasures decided that it might be better to have a smaller class." Tamaki said.
"Speaking of them, who's the head of countermeasures?" Yuri asked.
"Well," Tamaki said. "I don't know. The one who made the decision was the Ms. Okura. We didn't officially have one yet, but now we do." Yuri looked at Tamaki questioningly. "I don't know who it is. I believe the homeroom teacher chooses."
"Huh." Yuri said.
"Well, worse comes to worse, we'll pick who out head of countermeasures is." Tamaki said.
"Or we get a bad one." Fuyuko said, waggling her fingers.
She and her friends had been eavesdropping apparently.
"How long have you been eavesdropping?"
"You two aren't exactly having a whispered conversation." One of Fuyuko's friend said. "I'm Kiko Hideki. That's Aika Uchiyama, Sadao Ieyasu, and Manami Maeno."
"Nice to meet you all," Yuri said. "I'm Yuri Umeki,"
"And I'm Tamaki Enoki,"
"We know you, Tamaki, we were in the same class for the past two years." Fuyuko said.
"Really?" Tamaki asked.
"Class," Mrs. Satoh said, tapping the podium with her ruler. "Settle down. Is everyone here?"
"Yes!" The class chorused in reply.
"Okay then," She looked towards Ms. Okura, who had the seating chart in hand. Ms. Okuru nodded. "Well then, Class 3-3, I do hope we all can have a productive year together." Mrs. Satoh said, with a small smile. "Here's to staying healthy and having fun!"
There was a murmur of agreement from several students, others seemed a little more skeptical.
"Okay," Ms. Okura said in a serious tone. "Head of Countermeasures, stand and give your plan to the class."
A tall girl stood, her grey eyes flashed behind glasses.
"I am Nagako Ogura." She said walking up to the front of the class. "As far as our countermeasures go, it will be the same as previous years. Though Ms. Okuda had requested a smaller class in hopes of the curse having a smaller probability of occurring."
"I was right." Tamaki whispered to Yuri.
"Shh. We need to listen." Yuri said out of the corner of his mouth.
"In my opinion that is wrong, it's basic math, the smaller the number the more likely x event is to take place. The 'x event' is the curse. Other than this minor fluke, the countermeasures will remain the same. One person will be glossed over to make up for the extra person. I hope you can understand if you become that person." Her eyes scanned the class. "Am I clear?"
"Yes," the class chorused.
"I do believe that is all we have to cover today?" Nagako said.
Ms. Okuda nodded.
"If all goes well, the curse will not occur." She paused. "If it does not go well... We will cross that bridge when we come to it."
While she did try to reassure them, it was clear the class was worried, but they nodded after Nagako's talk.
"Thank you Nagako. If anyone has any questions about countermeasures or what to do, come talk with me." Ms. Okuda said.
Yuri looked at Tamaki.
The same thing was on both their minds.
They both didn't want to be the one who would be ignored in place of the dead person.
They would just have to see how the die was cast.
-------
The day passed by without any terrible incident that resulted in anyone's death.
"Nagako," Ms. Okura said at the end of the day as the class filed out of the room. "We need to talk,"
Tamaki and Yuri walked out last, in an attempt to hear whatever it was Ms. Okura was about to say.
However Ms. Okura refused to talk until the boys had left.
"Damn, I really wanted to know what they would say." Tamaki sighed as they walked out of the school.
"You aren't alone. But I bet they were deciding the student to be declared nonexistent." Yuri said in a defeated tone.
"No wonder they didn't start talking before we left." Tamaki said.
"Who do you think it will be?"
"Hopefully not me."
"I really hope it isn't me either."
"Maybe they'll pick Ikki."
"What? Why?"
"Well, he's kinda scrawny... and so I thought..." Tamaki gesticulated vaguely.
"Ah, I understand now." Yuri replied, sarcasm evident in his voice.
"Shut up." He slapped Yuri on the shoulder.
"Maybe it's Emiko."
"Not her! She's too pretty to be the nonexistent one." Tamaki complained.
Yuri laughed.
"Don't objectify her if you like her that much!"
They lightly shoved each other as they made their way down the street.
"Well, I better go, my house is down here." Yuri said.
"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow." Tamaki said, waving.
They parted ways.
-------
The next day at school, the homeroom teachers looked grim.
As soon as there were 19 of the 20 students in, Nagako stood in front of the class and tapped the chalk board.
"Alright. We have our nonexistent person. They will be arriving shortly." She said. "I will write their name on the board."
And she wrote it out.
Tsuruki Hiro.
"Now then, as long as he is not spoken to for the rest of the year. All will go well." Nagako said. "Understand?"
The class nodded in return.
A scream and then a loud crash sounded from down the hall.
"What was that?"
"Tsuruki?"
Tamaki and Yuri stood with Fuyuko and her group of friends.
Class 3-3 rushed out and towards the sounds' source.
There were some students down at the bottom of the stairs.
And Tsuruki Hiro lay at the bottom, neck turned at an odd angle, a little blood puddle was behind his head.
One of the girls screamed.
Nagako made her way down the stairs and gently pressed two fingers against Tsuruki's neck.
She looked up the stairs at the class and shook her head.
A boy near the back of the group whimpered.
The Curse had taken it's first victim.
