//I was running out of breath and my lungs burned with fire. My side ached as if knives were stabbing it repeatedly. The buildings around me were broken and burning, the air too hot. I couldn't run much longer and I'd been running forever. I knew they were there, about ten of the monsters. They were NOT humans. People worshiped them like gods but I knew better. Knowledge is pain but knowledge is power, power I was given for a nameless reason.
I could hear them breathing. Right behind me getting closer, closer, closer. I knew what this meant, I knew what was going to happen next, I practically felt it. I'd lived it many times before. Their breathing became my breathing, ringing in my ear, louder, louder, louder. There was a high, sharp, gray metal fence in front of me. I knew where it led. Could never get over in time, could never save myself.
Suddenly, but not unexpectedly, "he" grabbed me. "He" pushed me to the ground, practically tackling me. My face hit the pavement harder than last time, always harder. I heard a crack. The others watched carefully as "he" prepared it, the gun. "He" aimed it, shot it....
"BOOM" the sound echoed throughout the burning city. Then all the sounds, which had become almost unbearable, faded away, further, further, further.//
