"What are you doing over the weekend?" Jordan asked me as we walked home from school. Probably just working to be honest.
"You should come to Jakes party on Saturday, it would be so much fun if you were there." She said blocking me from continuing.
"Jordan, you know I'm not good at talking to people, and I could really use the money." I said walking around her.
"Yeah I know, I just wish you could get a break and live a semi normal life."
"Tell me about it." I laughed. "I haven't had a day off in months."
"Exactly, that's why you should go to the party!" She said putting her arm around my shoulder. "Come on Dani it'll be fuuuuuuuuuuuun." She said clasping her hands together, while contorting her face into a puppy dog eye and a big pouty lip.
"Fine, I'll get off early and come for a little bit, but let me just say your puppy face looks more like a potato than anything else." I said and we both laughed. I looked at my watch. It was almost 4. "I gotta go, text me later!"
"Okay you workaholic"she said waving goodbye as I hopped on my skate board and sped to my apartment.
As I unlocked my door, I realized that it wasn't even shut all the way, and the wood on the door had been pried off. This can be happening. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called the police.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"I think someone broke into my apartment, I don't know if they're still here or not..." I said backing away from the door.
"Where are you located?"
"I'm in the Chelsmore apartment complex."
"Someone is headed to your location right now, I will stay on the phone till they arrive."
"Okay."
"Are you safe?" The woman asked.
"I don't know, the doors broken, but I don't want to go inside."
"Everything will be okay, I need you to step back from the door and wait for the police to arrive.
"Okay, I'm going to go in the other hallway."
"They should be there any minute."
"Okay." I could hear sirens in the distance. I stayed on the phone with the dispatcher until they arrived.
"Are you Ms. Matthews?" An officer asked as he examined the door.
"Yes sir."
"And this was what the door looked like when you arrived?"
"Yeah, I went to unlock it, but it just pushed open, and that's when I realized it was broken."
"Stay here" he said, and signaled to the other cop to follow him. They entered my apartment and after a few minutes returned.
"All clear. Can you examine the area and notify us if anything of value is missing?" They asked leading me into my apartment. I walked around looking for my valuables and after a few moments, I had realized nothing had been taken.
"Everything is still here." I said. "Why would someone break in if they weren't going to take anything?"
"Well there are a few options there. Do you have anyone you know that would want to harm you?" The first officer asked.
"Not that I know of, is someone trying to hurt me?" I asked.
"Maybe" the second cop answered. "The other possibility is that they got the wrong location." He said going to examine the surrounding apartments. "We'll need you to stay somewhere else while we figure this out." He said looking at me. "Do you have any family you could stay with?" No, they're all dead I thought.
"No, but I can stay with my friend." I said pulling my phone out to text Jordan.
"Also, you will need to put any jobs, school, or activities on hold. If this was an attacker, they may be able to track you to those locations." The first officer said.
"Okay, just let me call my friend really quick." I said dialing her number. No answer. I guess I'll try her house number.
"Hello?"
"Jordan? Is that you?" I asked
"Yeah, sorry my cell is dead." She said laughing.
"I need to stay at your place for a few days."
"Sure thing, is everything alright?" She asked worry laced in her voice.
"Yeah, I'll explain everything when I get there." I reassured her...
