I pushed the doorbell to the Blake household, and patiently waited outside. I hope they don't think poorly of me showing up with police officers...
"Dani? What's going on?" Jordan's dad answered the door.
"I-I..." I tried to answer but I didn't know what to say, so the officer took over for me.
"Hello sir, I'm officer Morello." He said shaking his hand. "Her apartment has been broken into, and she needs somewhere to stay for a couple of days." He said smiling.
"Oh that's awful, you've been through so much already, come in." He said holding the door open. I walked in and slipped my shoes off and sat them beside to door. I stood there awkwardly while Jordans dad chatted with the officers, and after a few minutes they left. "Jordan had to go to soccer practice but she'll be home in about an hour." He smiled and sat down. "You know where the guest room is, go get comfortable, it sounds like you'll be staying with us for a few days." He said happily, turning the tv on. I softly made my way up the stairs to the guest room. Jordan's house is so nice. The carpet is soft, and the walls are freshly painted. Much cozier than my tile floored apartment with the chipped walls.
I had never stayed in the guest room before, I normally just slept on the floor in Jordan's room, but I knew where it was. Jordan's cousins had visited once and we had hung out in the guest room the entire time. I sat on the bed and closed my eyes. I needed to call work.
I pulled my phone out of my bag and called my manager.
"Hello? This is Cal's Diner how may I help you?"
"Hey Holly, its Danielle Matthews I need to get off work for a few days, my apartment was broken into and I'm not allowed to go to school or work."
"Oh that's awful, I'm so sorry! I'll see who can make up your shifts, did they steal anything?"
"No, they think I might be in danger, someone might be trying to hurt me."
"Wow, that sounds like an episode of Castle." She said. "Hopefully they figure this all out and we can have you back here working in a jiffy." I laughed. Holly was so nice to me.
"Thank you so much, I'll call you when I find out more."
"Okay, take care! Bye!"
"Bye.." I said hanging up. The cops told me on the way here that they would handle calling the school, so I didn't have to worry about that. Hopefully I can go home soon.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"DANI!" I jumped. I guess I had fallen asleep after calling Holly. "My dad told me about your apartment..." she hugged me. "Everything's going to be okay! Plus you get to stay with me!" She said pulling away. I laughed.
"You won't get sick of me?" It was her turn to laugh.
"Of course not you weirdo. Come on dinner is ready!" She said running out the door and heading downstairs. I shook my head and followed her. As we reached the dining room, the smell of steak and mashed potatoes filled the room. My mouth watered. I hadn't had a home cooked meal in a while.
"Did you enjoy your nap?" Jordan's dad chuckled. "You looked exhausted when you got here." He said sitting at the end of the table. I nodded and sat next to Jordan. Ms Blake walked in and sat a bowl of green beans on the table before coming up behind me to give me a hug.
"So good to see you again, it's been awhile." She said smiling at me. Jeez it had been awhile. I hadn't been here for about half a year.
"It's good to see you too. " I smiled back.
Dinner was quiet, but it was so nice. As soon as I took my first bite I was reminded that I hadn't eaten anything today, and I had seconds of everything. I thanked Ms Blake for the meal and helped her clean up afterwards. I didn't really talk because I was thinking too much. Who would want to hurt me? What could I have done to make someone want to cause me harm? I told everyone goodnight and headed back up the stairs. I was exhausted, I never realized how tired I always was. As pictures of my broken door, and the fire swirled through my head, everything became dark as I fell asleep.
