I entered the red and white tent to see chairs sprawled across the room, the curtains down and two heads talking as they waited for the show to begin.
I sat myself a couple of seats behind them as I listened to their conversation.
"can you see okay, darling?" a woman in a red dress with strawberry blonde hair spoke
"there's nothing to see, we are the freaks?" the boy complained
"I'm getting bored. I don't like this, mother"
I wasn't able to quite understand what the woman said next but it didn't seem like it was helping.
as they stopped talking a man yelled "places, everyone" and it was a go.
I watched as pepper and salt scrambled to the other side of the stage and I heard the boy mumble something under his breath.as the show began my attention left the boy and went onto ethel as she introduced the show to the audience of three.
"my monsters aren't prostitutes" elsa spoke to the boy and his mother
"you misunderstand, we don't want to buy anyone for the night, we want to buy them. period."
I walked up to the group as they continued with whatever was going on
"5,000" the boy spoke
"for one maybe, but there are two beauties here."
"okay, 10,000"
"do you have any idea what kind of box office they'll bring in over the next year? they're my headliners."
"15,000, and not one penny more." the woman declared
"what's going on?" I asked cautiously
the boy turned his head and gave me a smile before turning back to elsa
"come, dandy. I need a long hot bath" the woman interfered as she turned to the exit and walked off
her boy, dandy? well, he followed after her.
"that was odd, no one has ever tried to buy a freak before" jimmy spoke
I sat on the stage and finished smoking my cigarette, I heard talking but didn't bother to look up but to just listen.
"please! just take a chance on me. you'd be saving my life" a familiar voice yelled
"you know what I wouldn't give to have real hands like yours? to be able to touch a girl without scaring her? from where I'm sitting you got the world on a string, so, you go home to your mansion on the hill and you thank god for all you got. now scram! I got to sweep a tent" you looked up to see jimmy speaking to the same boy from yesterday.
you continued to watch as the boy stomped out of the tent.
you quietly followed the boy to his car and watched as he continually banged his head onto the steering wheel.
"I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you..." he screamed
"hey, hey. calm down" I spoke trying to be as comforting as possible
"what happened-" before I was able to get an answer he had already driven off.
I quickly pulled jimmy away from the others to ask him about the boy from yesterday
"wanted to be a part of the show, I told him no" he spoke before turning his head back to the twins who were supposed to be singing yet it sounded more like a cry for help.
"what about dot?" jimmy asked the twins
"dot doesn't have any talent" bette laughed
"that's true" dot added "I don't even know that song"
"so sing something else. whatever you want. sing it to me." jimmy spoke "pretend nobody's here. just me. go on."
star's shining right above you
night breezes seem to whisper I love you
birds singing in the sycamore tree
dream a little dream of me
