(Raine's POV)
I watched Parker push the tables away from the front door, she made it look so easy. It made me wonder just how strong she really was and what other things she could do. She did say that all the books and movies about vampires were horribly wrong. I knew one thing for sure, she didn't sparkle.
She slowly opened the door and peaked her head outside, looking left, then right, then left again. I looked past her into the dark, moonless night. She quietly pulled the door shut again. "I didn't see any of them roaming around out there, so you should be okay until I come back." She seemed like she was contemplating something. She held up a finger,"Wait here." She walked into the kitchen and returned holding a large knife. She smiled and handed it to me.
"Let me guess, the machete store was all sold out?" I smiled and carefully took the knife from her hand. "Thank you."
She shrugged,"You're welcome. While I'm gone, please don't leave the house." She headed for the door without another word.
"Don't you want your shirt back?" I asked, but she shook her head no. To be honest I was glad she didn't want it back. Having a piece of her so close to me made me feel warm and protected. She turned back and gave me a warm smile that even reached her eyes.
"I'll be okay without it. Be safe, okay?" She slowly opened the door and stepped out, quietly closing the door behind her. She was gone. What could possibly go wrong? Leaving a human alone in a zombie apocalypse. I barricaded the door as best I could, before taking my knife and going upstairs.
The upstairs was small and faintly decorated, much like the downstairs. The first door I came to was closed. I held up the knife in one hand and slowly turned the doorknob with the other. I swung the door open quickly, it hit the door stop with a small bang. The room was definitely a teenage boy's. There were piles of clothes all over the floor, the bed was unmade, and it smelled like rotting pizza. Do all boys keep their room this way? I thought it was just my little brother.
The thought of my little brother brought tears to my eyes. Erik. Everyone used to say we looked so much alike that we could be twins, we both inherited our blonde hair and green eyes from our mother. Erik was always tanner than I was though. He also had dimples that I was mad jealous of. My brother was only one year younger than me, but I always used that one year to my advantage. I'd always get to ride in the front seat, choose the movie we were going to see, or the restaurant we were going to eat at. My heart clenched in my chest. Why did I take advantage of what I had? Mom, Dad, Erik, they're all gone. I sniffled silently and wiped my eyes on the sleeve of Parker's shirt.
I exited the room, closing the door quietly behind me. The next door I opened was the bathroom. Nothing out of the ordinary here. The second to last door of the hallway was a study, with a big oak desk and matching bookshelves filled with a bunch of classics. I hoped we'd stay here long enough for me to read some of them. Why not? I had all of the time in the world now. I left that door open and moved to the very last door at the end of the hall.
Again I readied my knife and carefully opened the door. Oh my God...My breath caught in my throat and I couldn't stop myself from gagging at the awful stench that invaded my nostrils.
I was right, it was a master bedroom. What I had not anticipated was the three dead bodies lying on the bed, with a mural of blood covering the wall. Mother, father, and son. All three shot in the head. It looked like a scene straight out of a horror movie. Upon further inspection, I noticed the gun was still in the father's hand. I couldn't even begin to imagine the horrors that took place in this room. I guess they didn't want to take their chances with the zombies.
I swallowed hard and inched closer to the corpses. I covered my nose and mouth with my shirt. The stench was almost too much to bare, let alone the actual decaying bodies. Are you really going to take the gun? I shook my head and ran from the room, clumsily slamming the door behind me. I made it down the hall and into the bathroom, before I collapsed to my knees and began to retch.
