(Raine's POV)

I looked up into the face of the girl that had just saved my life, and God was she beautiful. So beautiful that it was hard to believe she was human. Her eyes met mine and I gasped. Her eye color was like nothing I'd ever seen before. They were silver, bright as a full moon. Perfectly accented by the black eyeliner and mascara she wore. A slight blush covered her pale cheeks, but it disappeared when she cleared her throat. I reluctantly untangled myself from her comforting embrace.

"T-thank you." I stuttered, running my hand through my thick blonde hair. Pull yourself together! This is the apocalypse not a speed dating session. I let my eyes roam over my savior some more. Her eyes were just the tip of the iceberg. She had long dark brown hair that fell past her shoulders, long eyelashes, and thin kissable lips. Even her pale skin was beautiful and flawless.

"Don't thank me yet. We're not completely safe here. That is if there's still somewhere to call safe." She tilted her neck to one side then the other and shrugged her shoulders, eliciting several sharp cracks from her back, neck, and shoulders. I winced at the noises and she shot me an apologetic look. "I'm Parker."

"I'm Raine." I murmured, smiling shyly.

"Well Raine, let's just find somewhere relatively safe to stay for the night. We can map out some sort of survival plan and gather supplies while we're at it." She started to walk the dry grass crunching under her boots as she did so, but she stopped when she noticed I wasn't following her. She turned back to me with a crooked grin. "Are you coming or do you want me to carry you again?"

"I can walk thank you." I muttered, looking away as the heat in my cheeks faded away. "But-"

"But?" She waited until we were side by side to start walking again. I hadn't realized how tall she was until then. She must have been six feet tall. I looked up at her, furrowing my eyebrows.

"Can I ask why you risked your life to save me? Also, how are you so relaxed about all this? People are dying and coming back to life as mindless, brain-eating zombies!" Her face seemed to go from calm and collected to defensive and locked down. Great job Raine. "I'm extremely grateful! Please don't get the wrong idea."

"So many other people died today. I saw an opportunity to save a life and I took it. That life just so happened to be yours." She swallowed hard and moved her eyes to the path ahead. She didn't seem too worked up about all the other people that died today. "I think they're attracted to noise. Maybe we shouldn't talk until we've found somewhere to stay." She stated flatly, a frown tugging at her lips.

I just nodded and quietly walked alongside Parker. But I have so many questions to ask you. Parker was like a case waiting to be solved and I wanted to be the detective that solved it. I remember seeing her around school. Bumping into her in the hall. Standing next to her in the lunch line, but I never once gave her so much as a second glance. My friends and I never paid much attention to the rumor mill in school, so if she was a hot topic we never would have known. My friends.

Tears welled up in my eyes. All my friends and family are dead, or worse..monsters. I shoved my balled up fists into my eyes to prevent myself from crying. Like Parker said, those things are attracted to noise. Things? They were people!

The last thing I wanted to do was attract another horde. Parker turned to me, startled expression on her face as if she didn't know how to react. A strangled sob escaped my throat. She looked into my eyes and her expression softened. She quickly glanced around ensuring our safety, before pulling me into a warm embrace. My arms slipped around her neck as the tears started to fall. Her arms tightened around my waist almost painfully, as sobs began to rack my body and I buried my face in the soft fabric of her shirt.
