Once again, the three were sucked into the vortex of purple matter. Rose, Tamara, and Amy were once again in the Tower of London. The nausea Rose was feeling was quickly replaced by fear and anger. She stood up and faced Kampe. "What labyrinth are you going to throw us in now, Kampe?"
Kampe smiled. " It looks like you've brought a friend with you. A rare beauty too, aren't you, Tamara McAllister?"
"Whatever you want to do with my sisters, you are going to have to get through me first." Tamara stepped in front of the younger girls."
Sisters? Amy thought. Tara considers me to be her sister?
"Nuntius Mortis was not very happy with me when I let you two meddling nuisances off without a fight, so unfortunately, I'm going to have to kill you. Fortunately for you, I'm bored. I need a challenge, so I'll give the three of you swords." Kampe examined her grotesque nails.
"But I don't know how to use a-- Ahh!" Amy quickly dodged the incoming hook that Kampe jabbed at her. The hook glowed a neon green showing poison.
"Now, now," Kampe said. "It's no fun just dodging all my attacks. Fight!" She sliced at Rose who parried the strike.
Rose's heart beat harder and harder with each moment "Amy, Tamara, I need your help!"
"But I didn't pay attention during our fencing unit," Amy protested.
"Well to bad for you. But I'm about to die here, so hurry up!" Rose jabbed at Kampe who swiftly dodged the attack. "Anytime now, big sister!"
"Okay, here goes nothing. But if I don't make it to medical school, it's your fault." Tamara whimpered.
"SHUT UP AND FIGHT!"
Tamara quickly got up, sword in hand. While Rose had Kampe distracted, Amy snuck behind her and was about to deliver a fatal blow. Kampe used her other hook to grab Amy's sword out of her hand. Amy, now defenseless, had no choice but to slowly back into a wall, while Kampe towered above her.
"Any last word, child?" Kampe sneered.
Those were the last words she spoke before Tamara stabbed her in the back.
Tamara dropped the sword as soon as Kampe disintegrated. She stared at her hands while rocking back and forth. "I just killed someone. I just killed her." Tamara kept whispering.
Rose put her hand on her sister's shoulder. "You did the right thing Tara. She would have killed Amy."
Tamara's breath hitched. "Rose, I'm in Pre-Med. I'm supposed to heal people. And I just killed a person."
"She wasn't a person, Tamara," Amy tried to say as gently as possible. "Just tell yourself that. She was a monster."
"She wasn't a human, but what difference does it make. Human or not, no person deserves to die. And she seemed to genuinely regret trying to kill us." Tamara's eyes were now blank.
"Tara, I'm sorry if I sound insensitive, but you are going to have to stop thinking like this. We'll never get anything done," Amy said, as gently as she could.
Tamara only sniffed.
"Come on." Rose slowly led her sister to the entrance of the labyrinth "The sooner we get Violet, the sooner we can leave."
Once again, the girls followed the bricks until they got to the center of the labyrinth. But once they reached the center, the trio was met with a terrible surprise.
"No," Rose breathed. "It can't be."
Violet was gone.
"That's impossible," Amy frowned. "How did she get out?"
Tamara stared at the wall. "Have either of you noticed anything about Violet?" Her voice died down to a whisper. "Was she different in anyway?
"I never knew Violet that well," Amy replied. "But Rose did."
"She didn't seem different. I mean, she was quiet, but there's nothing strange about being shy," Rose added.
"But where did Violet go?" Amy asked. "Is she wandering around in Italy, or did she go home?"
"I think, right now, we can only hope that Violet at her house, or in a mental hospital nearby. Our problem is get out out this castle. Who knows where we'll end up, now that Kampe isn't alive," Rose whispered.
The girls followed the blue line of bricks to the entrance of the Tower of London. As soon as they stepped outside, the trio found themselves swept up in the crowds that the castle attracted.
"Of course, Nuntius Mortis couldn't pick a boring landmark. He had to pick one of the most popular in all of England," Amy muttered.
"Girls, what about our suitcases." Tamara's voice showed signs of panic.
"It's okay Tara. I bet Nuntius Mortis will bring it to us. He gave Amy the name of Como, didn't he?" Rose tried to be optimistic.
"But, he's still the enemy," Amy reminded her.
Once the sister came home, they were met with another lecture.
"Rose, you understand why I'm not very eager to send you back to mainland Europe?" Melinda said for the millionth time.
Rose sighed. "I know, you're my mother. It's your job to get worried. But Mum, we were fine."
Melinda rubbed her forehead. "No, you three were not fine. When you come home, you and Amy were fine, but Tara was in a state of shock, which is not what I expected of her."
"I'm fine, mum," Tamara muttered from the couch she was sitting on.
"And then, I find out that there is someone who is trying to harm, even kill you." Melinda stopped to take a breath.
Rose groaned. "Nuntius Mortis. But Mum, I'm the only one that knows the location of the chairs."
"Then tell someone else! I'm sure the MI6 would be happy to take the mission. What I can't understand is why the school board sent two seventh years abroad."
"Mum, Rose just told you, she's the only one who knows the location of the chairs and Amy is the only one who can see the chairs. If the board sent anyone else, the chairs would never be found. They don't even need me, Mum. I know why you want me to accompany them, but that doesn't mean I have to agree."
"Tara," now Melinda was on the defensive. "Even though Rose and Amy might think they don't need you, they actually do. How else are they supposed to get around without getting asked to many questions? And I know you will be useful to the 'mission'. And even though Rose won't admit it, I know she'd much rather have you accompany her than me."
Rose nodded. "I will admit it, Mum. Tara, I'm sorry, but we do need you. And I think you are a better guardian than Mum or Mrs. Wood. You aren't boring like they are."
"Hey," Melinda tried to look offended, but the McAllister sisters knew she was happy they were finally getting along.
