By the time Tom could get off of work, which was an hour late, Ana had somehow managed to trip up the stairs, forget where she'd put her phone, spill Dezarae's juice on herself and the baby, and drop her wedding ring in the toilet. Half an hour before he was supposed to be home she finally broke down and started to cry. I'd stood by helplessly while she'd fished out her ring from the toilet and proceeded to drop it back in again. While she'd sat on the bathroom floor, sobbing, I regarded the ring in the commode and somehow deposited it on the rug beside her. I'd managed to deduce that she was so upset due to something Tom had said the night before, but both he and I were clueless as to what that was. He came home saying something to the effect of 'my boss kept me late' but I don't think she really believed him. maybe something to do with how he didn't look her in the eye when he said it.
Dinner was eaten in separate rooms tonight. It felt foreign, unnatural as if the thing in the basement had seeped up the walls and infected their lives. When they finally went to bed I was relieved to see that they slept together; I didn't want Tom to sleep on the couch. When they had settled in for the night I sat on the bottom step and waited. Waited for the Winchesters to come, or for the basement door to shake.
