No one reacts, they didn't last time either. I stare at the the people in the dome. I recognize them. It is the Hewett family, the Mr. and Mrs., and their daughter Kali. They were my parent's friends, they would come over for dinner. Kali is only a year younger than I am.
Their eyes look hollow and broken. I feel a pang in my gut. This feels wrong, we have gathered to witness the murder of three innocent people, who's only crime is being sick. They should be given a warm bed, not a gas chamber.
I step forward, tempted to say something, but I think better of it. No one would listen.
"Please say your goodbyes" the voice says, cutting through my thoughts.
A small group of people steps forward. I recognize the in front. Her name is Azura Monaci, and she was Kali's best friend. She is not crying.
"Goodbye Kali." she sounds disgusted, and final. Kali pounds on the glass sobbing. I see a twinge in Azura's bright blue eyes, a crack in her armor. She really does care. She turns around steels herself, and takes a deep breath. She turns around and lines her palm up with Kali's. Kali cries harder, and Azura turns away.
I tune out the rest of the people, I don't want to hear more. Quinn touches my cheek, I realize I am crying. I look around, no one else is, they seem unaffected.
Everyone is done saying goodbye. No, I think.
"Step back from the chamber" commands the voice. Stop.
"Everyone please say your final goodbyes" No.
There is a chorus of "goodbye's" in response. What are you doing?
"We will now begin the gassing, we assure you it is quick and-"
"STOP!" the scream tears through my throat. Everyone turns to look at me. I gulp, my mouth suddenly dry.
"What?" demands the voice.
"I said stop," I say quietly, "this is wrong." I say with more confidence. "Why are we killing these people? They are not criminals, they are not threats to society, they are sick. These people deserve to be treated like, well, people! What if they recover? What if their blood holds the cure for this disease."
"She's right." I hear someone say. I turn and see Azura standing inside the ring of people, staring at me. "We have been doing this for generations, and no one questions it. It makes me sick! I can understand where you are coming from, I used to think that way too." She walks over to me. "I am sure Jamie feels the same way. It is different seeing people you love in there" She gestures to the dome, and takes my hand. "We should try to cure the plague."
I hold my breath as I look into the silent crowd, waiting for a reaction. I am just about to say something when the crowd erupts into chaos.
..........
I am back at the house. I was knocked unconscious in the mob during the assembly. I woke up here three hours later with a bandage on my head, and an IV in my arm. ERAA informed me that the Hewett family has been successfully terminated, and that Azura and I have been placed under house arrest until future notice.
ERAA tells me that I am confined to my bed for at least the next four hours, and that Quinn is visiting with her new friend Vina, and is fine.
I drift off to sleep thinking about the Hewett family, and who will be the next plague victim.
