It was early morning when Peggy walked into Penny's room. She stared at the 5-year old girl, who sat on the floor, doodling in her notebook, with a gloom expression on her face. Peggy walks over, kneeling next to Penny.
"I know, Aunt Peggy," Penny stated in a glum tone as she continued doodling in her book. "About Uncle Howie."
Peggy frowned, pushing a piece of Penny' fallen hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry, Darling."
She extends her arms out, offering a hug. Penny looks up, sets down her pencils, and hugs Peggy. Peggy held the girl close, tightening her hold on Penny, knowing the pain she must be going through because Peggy, herself was feeling the same about losing a longtime friend.
"Come here," Peggy said. She stood up and guided the girl to her bed. Peggy sat down as she lifted the girl, setting her down on her lap.
"You know, Uncle Howard really did care for you," Peggy said, patting the girl's back comfortably. "He wanted nothing but the best for you."
Penny leans back in Peggy's arms, still sitting on her lap. She frowns, trying not to cry over the loss of her uncle.
"I know. He said I remind him of Aunt Sadie."
Peggy smiles as she leaned her head against Penny's temple, her arms wrapped around the little girl.
"I'm not surprised," Peggy chuckles to herself, thinking about crazy Sadie. "Your Aunt Sadie was a wonderful woman and my best friend at the time. I'm sure you'll grow up to be just like her."
Penny sat up and gazed back at Peggy. She smiled lightly at the mention of Sadie, the aunt she always admired. "I hope so. I want to make you and Uncle Howie proud. And Aunt Sadie proud too."
Peggy grinned at Penny. "And that you shall do, Darling."
She kisses the girl's forehead, knowing well enough that Penny is headed in the right direction toward a great future.
