Chapter 12

"Hey guys!" Ashley said, her voice ridiculously high. I heard Lauren and Darren groan quietly in annoyance from beside me.  

Ashley was wearing a very short skirt and a low cut pink top, with her perfectly straight blonde hair falling around her shoulders. 

"What are you doing here, Ashley?" Darren said, clearly struggling to sound nice. Ashley beamed. "Darren!" she said with WAY too much enthusiasm "Omg, I haven't seen you in, like, years!" 

Darren frowned. "It's only been a month, Ashley." 

"But it feels like YEARS!" she said over dramatically. Darren nodded uncertainly. "Right..." he said slowly. "So, uh, what are you doing here?" 

"Well. I saw a poster for the play and I saw my Joey-Bear's name on it, and I thought I would drop by to watch it and say hi!" Ashley beamed, ignoring Lauren's scowl, then turned to face me. "You know, I don't think I caught your name." 

"I didn't throw it." I replied coolly. Ashley's smile faltered, before she laughed forcedly. "Oh, you're so funny." 

I smiled back, struggling not to laugh at her "My name is Aliana." I told her. She nodded, looking me up and down. She opened her mouth to say something, but Lauren interrupted by saying "The show's about to start. You should sit down." 

Ashley walked away, looking mildly affronted, just as the lights went down and a spotlight lit up the curtain in front of the stage. Nick and Matt walked out, grinning. "Hey guys." Matt said, smiling nervously at the audience. "Uh- Well; first of all, thank you for coming to the show! It means a lot to us. Please turn off your cell phones and stuff. The exits are over there-" He gestured to the back of the theatre "So if you need to tinkle or there's an emergency just head out that door. Uh, there are program's and stuff available by the door-" 

I glanced around the theatre as Matt spoke. The theatre was almost full up, which had to be a good sign. I could see Ashley sitting near to the back, next to a guy with dark blond hair. 

I looked back around as Matt and Nick finished up speaking and walked to the side, and the curtain began to pull back. The stage was fairly plain save for a big double bed with white sheets in the centre. I grinned as Joey sat up and stretched, beginning to sing. 

I heard Darren snort with laughter as Joey sang "And I just say, 'Hey! It's me... And my dick" and pulled back the covers, revealing Walker, who grinned and yelled "He-llo!!". 

The audience laughed. I grinned. Maybe this play would be better than it sounds.. 

I couldn't help but laugh when Jaime came on and started using her 'Sally' voice, but it was nothing compared to the laughing fit that me and Lauren had when Brian and Nick Strauss came on wearing wigs and pink dresses and started to sing.

According to my phone, the play had been on for almost an hour and ten minutes. My stomach muscles were sore from laughing so hard. 

"Guys, no one can come into the choir room, 'cause Joey Richter is crying in here!" Jaime shouted, causing everyone in the audience to laugh. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, but ignored it. 

"Joey.. I-I- I love you." 

"Yeah. I love you too friend." 

"No, no Joey I mean.. I LIKE you." 

Joey gasped in total shock, causing everyone to laugh again. Over all the laughter I could hear one very high, false laugh. I turned in my seat and saw, as I expected, Ashley laughing and flipping her hair back. I frowned slightly and whispered to Lauren "It's dark. Who's she trying to impress?", which caused her to grin at me. 

I turned my attention back to the play, where Joey and Jaime had began to sing Even Though, with AJ and Lily dancing in the background. 

I felt my phone buzz, and I ignored it again. 

"I thought I wanted someone perfect as could be, When what I needed was the one who was perfect for me.." 

Jaime joined in with Joey "Even though I felt it from the start, it's only now we're beating with one heart.." 

My phone was vibrating again. It was getting harder and harder to pretend I didn't notice. 

"Wow!" Jaime said, putting her hand to her chest "Did you feel that?" 

Joey nodded. "Yeah. It's like our hearts just skipped a beat." 

"Oh, well, that's probably because our hearts are dancing a waltz to a song in 4/4 time." Jaime said whilst motioning to AJ and Lily dancing, which caused near hysterics. 

"It's almost like they're... Beating together." 

"It's like they've always.." 

Then came the moment I had been least excited about. The kiss between Joey and Jaime. I shifted uncomfortably, and my phone chose that moment to vibrate again. I decided quite abruptly that this would be a great time to answer the call, and got up, whispering to Lauren that I'd be right back. She gave me a concerned look, obviously thinking that me leaving had something to do with what was happening on stage (Which it sort of did, but still). 

Once I got outside the theatre door I answered the phone.  

"Ali?" it was Maggie, and she sounded strange 

"Maggie? Are you okay? What's wrong?" I asked, getting worried. 

"Sweetheart, when are you coming back?" her voice still sounded weird, but I couldn't out my finger on why. 

"Not until tomorrow, remember? Why? Is something wrong?" I frowned, and began to pace anxiously. 

"Oh. Tomorrow. Ok dear." I realised quite suddenly why she sounded weird. She was trying not to cry. 

"Mags?" I used the old nickname I used to use when I was younger. "Please tell me what's wrong." 

I heard her take a deep, rattling breath. "I-I just need to talk to you. " 

I felt my throat tighten. "I can come home. I'll come home now." 

"No, baby. You stay and enjoy yourself." while you can. The unsaid words seemed to echo. 

"Mag-" I began, but she cut me off by saying "I'll talk to you tomorrow baby girl. Good night." 

There was a beep as the line went dead. I didn't move, keeping the phone up to my ear for another few minutes before turning and walking back into the theatre.
