It was January the 10th. A rather bleak day to say the least, it was raining but it was the type of rain that was insignificant until you were leaning against the a bus stop with raindrops trickling off the end of your nose. But nevertheless it was January the 10th, the day that considerably changed my life.

I'd been waiting for the bus for just under 45 minutes, I pulled out a compact mirror from backpack and examined my face. My brown hair had darkened due to the rain, leaving it looking lifeless and flat. My foundation had worn away exposing my acne scars that I was ever so self conscious of. I reluctantly pulled out my concealer from a pocket in my backpack and smeared it on my cheeks. I could feel eyes burning into me as I examined the floor aggressively rubbing in the makeup causing my cheeks to turn a dark crimson colour.

The bus was cold and the atmosphere was uncomfortable, I was fixated on a mother rocking her baby back and forth gently planting delicate kisses on her forehead. I zoned back into reality and realised Lily was talking to me. Lily was my best friend, she was mesmerising. Everything about her was intriguing and that was why we were labelled as popular. She was the star and I was her sheep that followed her around.
"Kyra, Kyra"
She nudged my arm pulling me back into reality.
"Are you coming to George's tonight?"
George was Lily's boyfriend. They were lily and George, Northwoods celebrity couple practically.
"Erm I'm meant to be going to dinner with my mum but I'll get out of it"
"You better!" She playfully spoke poking me in the stomach.
Lily continued talking about George's party and how Northwoods finest students would be attending, of course supplying a collection of class A drugs from the bank of mummy and daddy.
That's what Northwood parties were about, drugs, sex and phoneys that only cared about climbing up the social ladder.

I'd just gotten home, I was greeted by my mum sat at the kitchen table opening letters concentrating on the small print.
"Fucking hell kyra where are my glasses? I can't see a thing"
I picked the letter from her hands and examined the words. I felt the air immediately leave my lungs as I saw where the letter had come from.
"Northwood state prison" I spoke. Mum looked up at me with a confused expression plastered across her face.
I reluctantly tore open the letter reading it aloud.
"Dear mrs Miller,
I am writing to inform you of the release of Mr Ian Miller from Northwood state prison. I wish for you and your family to attend a court hearing on January the 21st, when shortly after your husband will be released on probation.
Yours sincerely
Northwood state prison.
I was shaking as was my mum. My brother and sister came into the kitchen.
"What's going on?" My sister Faye asked.
"Dads coming home" I yelled flinging my arms around the both of them.

It was nearing 7pm by now and id just remembered about George's party. I didn't want to go at all because parties weren't my thing but I promised lily I would.
I hoisted a pink skintight velvet dress up adjusting the straps. I paired it with a pair of white converse to give my look a casual vibe.
I looked in the mirror sucking my stomach in and pushing my boobs out. I was insecure and that was pretty evident but how could you not be when Lily Rodgers strutted around school with me on her arm as an accessory.

George only lived 2 blocks down so I decided to walk considering the rain had more or less stopped. As I was walking down the road I was greeted by my neighbour Dylan ,his mum and little sister.
"Hello mrs sprouse" I spoke giving her a subtle wave.
"Hello sweetie, long time no see. You're looking very glamorous" she said
"Thank you" I faintly smiled.
Carol sprouse. A single mother, 2 kids and a well paying job. A perfect life you could say. But I knew the reality of it. Carols husband left when Dylan was 10, it was a messy situation, years of abuse and a long string of affairs. Dylan doesn't speak about his dad or any other members of family he may have. Everyone saw what Carol wanted them to see but I saw past all of the fabrication. I saw a fragile broken woman screaming out for help whilst everyone else walked on by.
"See you later"I spoke, giving Dylan a wave as he stood on the street next to his mum holding the groceries innocently smiling.
