Dark crimson

Maybe I should have gone home. Maybe I should have sorted things with my mum and stopped off at Dylan's house to apologise to his mum that I left the way I did. Maybe I should have done all those things. But I didn't.

It was nearing 11:30 by the time I got to school. I had run 8 blocks and I looked a state. It was second period by the time I got there and the halls were quiet. I leant up against a row of lockers as a bead of sweat trickled down my chest, my heart beat was rapid and I was struggling to catch my breath. I was alone but I couldn't shake off Coles voice pounding in my head over and over. His words raced through my mind and I could feel the anger taking over my body for the second time today. But then it stopped. I thought back to the night of George's party. I thought back to the cracks in his voice as he was lying on the bathroom floor. I had caught him in a state of vulnerability and I could never hate him. I wanted to hate him but I knew I never could.

I was suddenly caught off guard by the opening of a door. I don't know why but I thought it would be Cole. Every inch of me hoped it would be Cole. But it wasn't. It was George.
My neutral expression harshened as my stomach sunk to the floor.
"Stay calm Kyra" i muttered under my breath. My body was flat against the locker as I bit my lip harshly. The thought of him and my mum raced through my mind and my eyes met his.
His expression said a lot about the way I looked. He looked concerned, I mean I must have looked possessed. As I stepped forward the bell rang and the halls flooded with people. I still had my eyes focused on George but now he was with Lily. His arm flung around her shoulder, gripping onto it with a tight grip as he laughed with a few other boys. Lily always radiated happiness but today was different. I watched them speak and laugh for a few minutes. I watched  single strands of George's hair fall in his face occasionally as he fiddled with the material on Lily's back.

She looked so thin and kept her head down for the majority of the time. I must have looked so strange to anyone watching me but I wanted to analyse what was going on. I could see the conversation between George and a group of 4 boys, each with a thin blonde on their arm coming to a close. He fist bumped each of them and grabbed Lily by the shoulder as they walked off. As they both walked past me in the halls Lily lifted the frames of her thick glasses from one side of her face to itch her eye. My breath instantly hitched and got caught in the back of my throat. The majority of her cheek bone was bruised a dark crimson purple that was hidden surprisingly well with her glasses. A million thoughts were racing through my mind. Maybe she just fell over I was convincing myself but when I came to think of it, gradually as time went on she had been acting less and less like herself.
What was going on with Lily?.
