“What happened?” I yelped.
“I have no idea,” Adam sighed. I looked at him and saw that his usual cheerfulness was gone. Almost all the mud had dried and fallen from between the tree logs.
“How can we fix this? We don’t want to work this hard just to have it all fall out!”
“Look here, some did not fall out here.”
“What is different about this section?”
“I am not sure. Look at it closely with me. Do you see that?”
I looked closely. The mud in the one section that did not fall out was not just mud. It held grass and sticks.
“Is that what kept the mud in?” I questioned.
“I am not sure. We will have to try again. We do not have time to re-mud all this wall today, but we do have time to do some. Let’s get a small amount of mud and mix in sticks and mud. We can put it in between these tree logs here,” he indicated a short section of the wall, “and just mud on this other section. Then we can see if this is really something that will work.”
Once again, we walked to the river and found some sticky mud, placed it in two medium sized elephant ear leaves, and brought it back to our house. Adam mixed in some sticks and grass into one while I slathered the mud in between the tree logs Adam had indicated earlier. Soon, he was daubing his mixture into the spaces he had identified.
“It is late. Let’s get clean, and eat. We can decide which of these will work best.”
------------
I agreed, and we walked to our bathing place in the stream near our home. I was tired. We had spent the day harvesting oats, then the disappointment of the mudding. I was glad that the pool still had warm water in it. After taking of my clothing, I waded out into the pool of water and sat down. The water relaxed my body. I had not realized just how tired I was. Adam was washing and thinking of the wall, while I was just sitting.
A melody filled my mind, and words slipped in. I began humming:
We left the Garden
To be happy,
We are here now
To learn and work.
We are working
We are learning
Hoping to gain more
Light and knowledge.
Planting new seeds,
Giving them water,
Growing food to
Feed our bodies.
Pulling tree logs
Goats are helping
Building homes to
Protect our selves
We are working
Learning each day,
Now a child comes
To grow our family.
Life is good here.
We are learning
Gaining daily
Light and knowledge.
“What is that you are doing?” Adam asked. “You sound happy.”
“I am. I am singing. The song was placed in my head, do you like it?”
