Chapter 7
The whole week, the cast, including myself, had to sit in that dumb circle reading our lines. Thursday morning was no different.
"Eddie, can you start that line a little louder, then gradually get softer?" Doug asked. "I don't know where she came from, but her voice, oh , her voice." He said, imitating the line.
Eddie nodded, then tried again.
Eventually, Abigail could tell that I wasn't exactly enjoying myself, so she let me go so I could rehearse on the piano. I climbed the staircase to the second level, which mostly consisted of seats for the balcony, but in the hallways outside of the auditorium, small rooms with pianos and chairs were available for us to use. I stepped into the first room available and sat on the chair in front of the piano. My sheet music was in my folder, which I had spread out against the stand.
Alright. Here we go. I looked through the sheets and slowly worked my way through the music, stopping here and there to write notes down on the papers. As I went through "Poor Unfortunate Souls" for the 5th time, it was getting quite a bit easier. I let out a deep breath, relaxing and letting myself enjoy my hobby.
A knock on the door made me jump and stop playing. I twisted around and hopped up from the seat to open the door.
"Hi," Carter said.
"Oh, hey," I awkwardly replied.
"I was up here taking some shots from the balcony and heard you playing. I was wondering if I could listen and maybe take a few shots?"
"Oh, um sure!" I said. He entered the room, and I closed the door behind him. It was just him and I in a small 4x4 foot room.
I took my seat back at the piano. "Sit wherever you'd like," I told him jokingly, gesturing to the one chair in the corner. Surprisingly, he pulled the chair right next to me and sat down, picking up his camera. He aimed it across the piano keys and - click!
I put my fingers on the keys and resumed where I had left off before Carter came in. He was silent, moving often to adjust his camera angle. I moved on to "Under The Sea" after I had a good grasp on the previous song, and Carter stood up, picking up his bag. Oh. He was already leaving.
But to my surprise, he actually got out a tripod from his bag and set it up right next to me. He placed the camera on and adjusted the height.
"Okay," he said. "I'm going to be taking some videos too, is that okay?"
I nodded, even though I wasn't thrilled. Carter came close to me and reached for my face, making me instantly jump back.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," he said, chuckling. "Just tilt your head a little bit this way." He put his fingers under my chin and pulled it a little to the right. "There, perfect." He went behind the camera again and pressed a few buttons. "Okay, I'm recording now. Just keep practicing and pretend I'm not here."
I looked up at my sheets and put my fingers in position. Luckily, I didn't make too many embarassing mistakes while playing, but that could always change.
I played and played until I glanced at the clock and realized how late it was.
"Whoa, it's 6:30?" I asked.
Carter looked at the clock too. "Oh, I guess so. Well, at least we're getting paid overtime."
I chuckled in agreement. Why wouldn't Abigail come get me? Carter got his bags together, and I put my sheets in my folder. We left the room and walked down the staircase, looking over the balcony. Yep, everyone was gone. Carter and I walked to the lobby together to punch out, but a certain voice stopped me in my tracks.
"Hey Hannah."
I froze, then turned around slowly. Yep, I knew that voice.
"Eli?"
