Mercy.
"Mondays are always going to be hard for us," Joshua said enclosing me in his arms. "After spending last night with you,I want to do it every night."
"Mnh, me too." I reached up,kissed him and gave him a gentle shove."you are going to be late. Go on before I chain you to the bed."
Laughing,Joshua released me and started to walk, but not before kissing me.
As soon as the door was closed, I double locked it and dove for the recorder in the empty suitcase in the closer. Placing it on bed,I turned it on.
In the mean time I pulled my poached copy of shakers from one of my drawers, sat down next to the recorder and started flipping through the pages.
The recorder started playing. Once again I blushed- David and his wife were as randy as I was with Joshua. I reached our and pushed the fast forward button until the sounds grew less coherent.
"For the life of me," the wife was saying,"I can't understand why miss laura wants to risk messing her dress by ridding a horse to the bridge, when she could have you drive her there."
Bridge? My ears perked up,the magazine on my lap forgotten. I pictured then sharing a pillow, David smoking one of his cigars and listening to the wife speak about her day.
"But will she listen to me?" Mrs David continued. "I swear,as the wedding gets closer, she gets more stubborn by the day"
"Maybe she and Jim thinks its romantic," David said.
"How romantic will it be if she tears that gorgeous gown?"
"Miss laura rides very good honey. No need for you to worry about that."
"Shows what you know,David!" I could almost imagine the wife sitting up in indignation.
"Pepper's been giving me lessons, and I've learnt a lot. Even experienced riders can't know what unfamiliar horse will do."
More about the bridge cmon.
"Eben a shadow can spoke a horse." Mrs David voice was rising,"and a wedding is at dawn. When the sun comes over that stone it could scare those horses to death. One of them could take off and ruin the whole wedding. No,no,its a foolish idea. I've got to talk her out of it."
"Baby, babe," David soothes. "You worry too much. Two Moons Bridge is a beautiful place for the wedding. Besides you can't be working about everything. You will go gaga."
"I suppose you are right," this was said begrudgingly.
"Come here, love, cuddle up and sleep."
I heard whispers of settling bedsheets and soon the tape grew silent except for Davids soft snores.
Finally the wedding location! Jim and laura were going to ride from the ranch out to the Two moons bridge.
Wherever that was.
I needed a map,but surely I could find at least one such shop on town. I jumped up, the forgotten magazine sliding down to the floor. I found myself staring down at Laura's slanty-eyed stare.
I scowled at Laura's image, then picked up the magazine and began slowly flipping through the pages, searching for the master head. If I don't find Joshua's name there,I'd move to the story credits.
The first name I saw was Joshua Donaldson, publisher and editor in chief. Mnh it didn't register. I was hunting for a reporter named Dickson, not a publisher named Donaldson.
A perusal of the story credits didn't produce a Joshua Dickson, so o returned to the masthead and a sudden trick of light washed out the last three letter of his surname. When the fact struck home, I felt like a horse that had just thrown me into a tree stump.
Joshua was no raw reporter,no hungry stringer. He owned the magazine and probably had years of reporting experiences. My chances of getting the story were slim, but if I told him about myself,I would forfeit any chance.
I considered doing just that, but memories of all the times my family had said,"you tried" came into mind. "Tried" and "failed" that's what they have meant.
No! I couldn't I wouldn't just give it away.
I got up,ignoring an ominous thickening in my throat, and then went to the dresser. I stood there for a long time with my hands on the top drawer, but in the end I left Joshua's tapes exactly where they were, untouched.
I know its only Mercy discovering about Joshua. Can't wait for Joshua's reaction when he discovered about Mercy.
