Waking up

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

My head feels dizzy. My mind is numb and my leg feels like thousand of fire ants are biting every inch. My eyes are heavy as I slowly open them. Immediately a bright light is shown into my sensitive eyes.

    "Cassy."

It's Tommy. His head is covered with a bandage.
My arm has an IV that snakes along to the other side of the bed.

"Look, I can't stay long. Luke is coming to pick me up. Listen, Dad's in prison and mom...mom's dead. She was pronounced dead at the house by the paramedics. She overdosed on meth and she hit her head pretty badly when she fell at home.  I don't know what's gonna happen."

I finally was able to use my voice.

"Why are you leaving me? Please take me with you! I have no one else besides you, Tom." Now tears are rolling down my cheeks.

    "Cas, I'm so sorry."

You're sorry? Sorry for leaving your own blood behind? How could you live with yourself? Anger and fear rise up in me like a growing thunderstorm. The whole reason why I am alive today is because of Tommy. He has always been there for me. He cheered me up when I was upset and picked me up when I was down.

Tommy got up from the small, green hospital chair and slowly walks towards the door.

"Tommy wait!" He stops dead in his tracks. He looks at me with wounded eyes.

"I'm sorry, Cas."And then he was gone.

There I was. Sitting all by myself in the big, white, empty room. I was now alone. That's all my life has been.
