~Spot's POV~I felt the Scratch's light breath against my neck as her arms we softly draped around my neck, drooping down to my chest. Her head was rested on the top of mine as she was now asleep. I didn't mind carrying her-- I actually wanted to, but I know she would barely let me. I carefully clutched her left leg, making sure not to hurt her. Hopefully the worst was that her ankle was spranged, hopefully nothing too serious. I'm not exactly sure where she got hurt, but when I find out, she's going to be drenched with my care.
Her arms clenched tighter around me and I felt her breaths get heavier and shorter.
"Scratch?" I call to her. She doesn't respond.
"Stop." She mumbles. "S-Scratch, what are you talking about, are you ok?" I ask hesitantly. "Stop." She said again, but a little bit louder, and it came out more as a whimper. I stop walking and furrow my eyebrows in fear and confusion.
"Stop it! Where's Spot!!" She cries. I feel drops of water roll down my neck and constant whimpering from Scratch. My eyes widen as I realize what's going on.I speed walk into the nearest alley and carefully place her down in the ground.
She immediately curls into a ball and tears were streaming down her face, but she wasn't awake. I start shaking her softly.
"Scratch, wake up!" I urge.
"S-Spot.. where's Spot, let me see Spot!!" She almost yells.
"Scratch, it's ok, it's alright, I'm right here." I say, shaking her a slightly bit more violently. She slowly opens her eyes, her arms and legs quivering and covered in small goosebumps. "Spot?" She says quietly.
"Scratch, I'm right here!"
She lunges at me and digs her head in the crook of my neck, crying even more.
"Scratch, what happened??" I ask, obviously worried it of my mind.
She just shakes her head, not giving me a response.
I give out a sigh, running my fingers through her hair over and over again.
"Shh, it's ok, it's ok." I coo, trying to calm her.
She pulls away from my shoulder and I softly kiss her forehead.
"Let's just go.." She mumbles.
As soon as we both stand up she immediately grabs ahold of my hand. I take a tighter grip protectively, and notice she's calming down-- but only a little bit.
She's limping on her left leg, but it doesn't seem to bother her-- but hell, it bothers me.
I open my mouth to say something but Scratch beats me to it.
"S-Spot, you don't have to carry me. I don't wanna fall asleep again." Her shaky voice says. As much as I want to, I can tell her mental pain is overshadowing her physical pain by a whole lot.
"Scratch, don't be scared, I'm here to protect you; always." I assure her.
Her mouth curves into a small smile, but I can tell that she's still scared out her wits. The grip she took on my hand had never left. It didn't grow looser, only tighter.
Does she have nightmares often? Of course not. She would tell me, and I've never seen her this scared, not even when I saved her from our burning tenement.
My shirt was still wet with her tears, but it only reminded me of how scared she was, it reminded me that I will never leave her side.We were walking across the Verrazano Bridge in silence, with her fear still showing.
It was getting dark, and I haven't heard anything from her except short, shaky breaths. All of a sudden, she walks in front of me and grabs ahold of my other hand.
"I love you, ok?" Her broken whisper tells me. I softly grab her face and kiss her right then and there. She stands on her tip-toes to reach my height.
We pull away and I just look at her for a long time."I love you too, ok?"
